21 Sport maltatoday, WEDNESDAY, 26 NOVEMBER 2014 MOTORSPORTS SAILING FORMULA 1 ASMK autocross and motocross continue on Sunday ON the Sunday 30th November the Assocjazzjoni Sport Muturi u Karo- zzi will continue with the motorsport program sponsored by ASMK Pasta POIATTI for the 2014/15 season. These events will take place at the ASMK Sports Complex at Ta' Qali where ASMK will be organizing the third event for the Autocross and is also expected to start the Motocross Championship. The program starts at 11:00am. Meanwhile last Sunday, the Asso- ciation organized the second Trials competition at tal-Ballut Blocks Ltd. hard-rock cutting quarry in the lim- its of San Pawl tat-Targa in Naxxar. This event was possible through the full cooperation of the quarry owners who have always cooperated with the ASMK Association to hold the Trials competitions in this locality. A look at what happened during Sunday morning Trials competition we saw that Class A was dominated for the second time by Damon Bonel- lo on a motorcycle Gas Gas. Damon managed ending the day with a record of two penalty points only and was fol- lowed by veteran Robert Caruana on a Gas Gas motorcycle. Robert finished the day with 19 penalty points. This shows that the sections were set at a high level for Class A riders. Class A third place was won by young Rowen Bonello on Beta driver who finished the day with 25 point penalty. Rowen is now competing his first Class A championship. In Class B the competition mainly was seen between Joseph Scicluna and Manuel Camilleri both riding on a Gas Gas motorcycles. From the start of the day Scicluna was seen to be in top form and managed to ride over the natural obstacles almost with ease so much so that he managed to perform Clean passes in the first two sections. Camilleri had a bad start but managed to recover in the second and third sections. Nevertheless Camill- eri had to be content with second place as Scicluna defended his place to the end of the day. As final result of the day Scicluna finished with 15 penalty points followed by Camilleri with 27 penalty points. Third place finisher was young Bernard Sammut on a Beta motorcycle. Bernard closed the day with a 32 point penalty in the Novice class. The next Trials event is expected to take place in January 2015. The date is to be announced in the coming days. Meanwhile, next week the Associa- tion is to start taking applications for the Annual Demolition Derby held in aid of the Malta Community Chest Fund. This year's edition is expected to take place on 21 December 2015. Meanwhile, the Association an- nounced a change in the annual pro- gram. The event which is scheduled to take place on Sunday 7 Decem- ber will be held on the following day Monday 8th December 2014 which is a Public Feast. This program begins at noon. This is a measure that ASMK is taking to give everyone the oppor- tunity to attend the annual Paqpaqli ghall iStrina to be held on Sunday 7th December. This short-handed race has been popular since its inception and the trophy bears the names of most of Malta's best sailors. The race will take place on Sat- urday 29 November, starting at 9am in Marsamxett Harbour and will follow a figure of eight course around the two islands pass- ing through the Comino chan- nels. Boats will sail to the Outer Munxar Cardinal Mark leaving it to Starboard, around the South of Malta leaving Malta to Starboard, to Filf la leaving it to Starboard, to the North Comino Channel leav- ing Comino to Starboard, around Gozo leaving it to Port, through the South Comino Channel leav- ing Comino to Port and Malta to Starboard then heading to the fin- ish at the Yacht Club. "The Royal Malta Yacht Club's association with Raymarine and RLR Yachting goes back to over 20 and this 85 nautical-mile regatta ranks among the most popular events in the annual calendar of sailing, keenly awaited for by double-handed racing enthusi- asts," said Godwin Zammit, Com- modore, Royal Malta Yacht Club. "We are grateful to Raymarine and RLR Yachting for their long- standing and ongoing support." The Raymarine Double Hand- ed Race Briefing will be held on Wednesday 26 November at 7.30pm at the Royal Malta Yacht Club, with the prize giving cer- emony being at the Club on Sun- day30 November. A number of great prizes, courtesy of Rayma- rine, will be presented to the win- ners in the various classes. MCLAREN Racing Director Eric Boullier says the team will be targeting success from the very first race of its new engine partnership with Honda. Having previously worked together between the 1988-1992 seasons, a pe- riod that yielded eight world titles, the two parties are reuniting for a second spell. Honda's new power unit was recently given its first outing in McLaren's de- velopment car at Silverstone, while it is also running at this week's post-race test in Abu Dhabi. Speaking to the media at the Yas Ma- rina Circuit on Tuesday, Boullier made clear that despite the short timeframe, victories must be the immediate aim. "We all want to go into Melbourne thinking we can win the race," Boul- lier said. "I know we can dream, but we are pushing to have this target because it's the only way for us to deliver what we want. "Both Honda and McLaren want to win as soon as possible and the target is obviously to put the right pressure where it needs to be to make sure we can be successful as early as possible." Boullier said Tuesday and Wednes- day's running will be more about com- pleting further systems checks with the new engine, rather than chasing lap times. "It's not about anything else but taking care of different parts of the engine, reliability, energy recovery and checking every code on every- thing we can," he explained. "It's going to take us maybe 10 runs before we go into another phase, which is putting a longer run in to see if there is no default value or anything going wrong after three laps. "That is going to be the plan and to gradually try to charge the engine and try to push, maybe not the limit in these two days, but put more on the electrical package and recovery." Stoffel Vandoorne completed his first run in the interim McLaren on Tuesday afternoon, having been de- layed by electrical issues, but later stopped on track and brought out the red f lags.
