Joseph Muscat said that Malta was expecting a meeting of the UNSC to- day to send a clear message that there was not much time left, unless they reached an agreement. "It is clear that there is need of a UN-mandated international inter- vention. What should be discussed is how this should be carried out and the involvement of the Libyan people in this decision," Muscat said. His stand on Libya found the sup- port of PN leader Simon Busuttil, who said the Opposition supported the position taken by the Maltese government vis-à-vis Libya but reit- erated that Malta should join a global alliance against IS. Busuttil said the Maltese people had to be reassured that the government was doing everything to ensure their security and welcomed assurances by the Prime Minister that there was no real threat against the island. He went on to condemn the be- heading of 21 Egyptian Christians in Libya and said the PN was support- ing the government's call for an in- tervention in Libya led by the United Nations. Today's meeting of the UN Secu- rity Council will take place following calls by Egypt and France, the latter a member of the Council. Italy, which last week said it would be ready to join a UN-led intervention, has now toned down its statement with Pre- mier Matteo Renzi warning that the situation required "wisdom, pru- dence and proper understanding" of the situation on the ground. Muscat said Malta would be the contact point with the Libyan people during these delicate times. CONTINUES PAGE 3 Joseph Muscat called for a UN-mandated international intervention
