Turkey slams claims it shipped weapons to Libya via Malta TIM DIACONO TURKEY'S foreign minister has strongly denied claims that Istan- bul supplied weapons to the Islamist government in Tripoli via Malta. "We never deliver weapons to Libya," Mevlut Çavuşoğlu said when asked by MaltaToday at a news con- ference. "These libellous claims are coming from Egypt and the UAE, two countries that have provided weapons to Libya." According to news station Al- Jazeera, pro-Libya Dawn journalist Muhammad Anwar cited a UN re- port that said that Istanbul was de- livering weapons to Libya via Malta. Çavuşoğlu said that Turkey was in favour of an immediate ceasefire in Libya and that it fully supports UN efforts to quickly find a political so- lution to the Libyan conf lict, rather than a military-based one. "We must take the necessary steps as soon as possible to combat these radical terrorist groups that threat- en our European fundamental val- ues," he said. "European values are threatened by both terrorism and racism, the two feeding into each other." He was speaking following the signing of a memorandum of un- derstanding between Maltese and Turkish diplomatic academies, the reason for his visit to Malta. Çavuşoğlu also praised Malta for supporting Turkey's bid for EU ac- cession. "We want full and equal EU mem- bership and we're willing to negoti- ate all the necessary chapters for accession," he said. "Turkey already contributes heavily to Europe's stability and foreign policy and its membership will enrich European values." Foreign Affairs Minister George Vella said that Malta and Turkey have agreed to set up a joint eco- nomic and trade commission that will oversee commercial relations between the two countries. He added that Turkish Airlines' deci- sion to increase its f lights to Malta, as of this summer, as well as Malta's decision to be more liberal in hand- ing out visas to Turkish citizens will further improve commerce. The two ministers also discussed the threats posed by Islamic State militants in Syria, Iraq and Libya, the Libyan and Ukrainian crises, and Turkey's potential future as an EU member. Turkey's foreign minister Mevlut Çavusoglu (left) with George Vella Spring hunting season should open, Ornis Committee recommends THE Ornis Committee has recommended the open- ing of this year's spring hunting season. The recommendation to the government was made after a vote was taken, ending with three votes in fa- vour, one against, and two abstentions. The decision comes just a month before the elector- ate decides whether spring hunting should be abol- ished altogether. The abrogative referendum takes place on 11 April. The Ornis Committee is the consultative body on hunting regulations. Last year's spring hunting sea- son ran between 12 and 30 April, both days includ- ed. Conservationists want spring hunting abolished be- cause the hunters' prey then are birds on their way to their breeding grounds in Europe. Every bird killed in spring, the argument goes, is one nest less, making spring hunting unsustainable to the species.
