maltatoday, WEDNESDAY, 6 MAY 2015 17 Events EMIRATES is further enhancing the entertainment experience for Economy Class travellers with the launch of new, redesigned headsets for its award-winning ice entertain- ment system in Economy Class. From the end of June, all Emirates A380 aircraft will be equipped with new headsets, with plans to roll out the headsets on the Boeing 777 fleet later in the year. These headsets have been totally redesigned with a view to improving sound quality, reduction of ambient cabin noise and overall comfort. The headset's rectangular shape makes it more ergonomic for the wearer, and pre- mium leatherette ear cushions en- hance comfort which is especially important on longer flights. "Emirates economy class head- sets are amongst the best in class for commercial airlines, and we've always recognised that sound qual- ity is vitally important in creating an enjoyable entertainment experi- ence. This new design will lift the audio quality to a new level, and now customers can completely immerse themselves in the broad variety of entertainment choices of- fered onboard," said Patrick Bran- nelly – Divisional Vice President, Customer Experience (IFE & Con- nectivity). Not to be left behind, young trav- ellers on Emirates will also receive new headsets on which they can en- joy up to 75 channels of dedicated children's entertainment from up to 2,000 channels overall. Emirates first introduced children's headsets in the late 1990s, featuring a smaller headset band which is more com- fortable for smaller heads. These fun and colourful new headsets will also have larger speakers for a more comfortable fit and much improved sound quality. The new headsets are the latest update for the innovative ice Digital Widescreen entertainment system, which in 2014 was awarded the 'World's Best Airline Inflight Enter- tainment' award at the SKYTRAX World Airline Awards for the 10th consecutive year. Customers in First Class or Business Class on all flights are already provided with ac- tive noise cancelling headsets. Customers can check what's show- ing on board their flight and plan their ice movie or music marathon before they fly, by visiting emirates. com. At the forefront of setting indus- try standards, in 2014, Emirates was the first airline to introduce Audio Descriptions in movies for visually impaired customers. In 2007, Emir- ates worked with Walt Disney Stu- dios Motion Pictures to introduce Closed Captions, the technology used by the hard of hearing, for the first time in inflight entertainment. More recently, Emirates introduced free Wi-Fi onboard and this facility is now available on 106 aircraft in- cluding its entire A380 fleet. On ice Digital Widescreen, Emir- ates' customers can enjoy a stag- gering choice of over 2,000 chan- nels of entertainment, with over 500 movies from around the world, hundreds of hours of TV includ- ing box-sets of popular shows and thousands of hours of music from contemporary to classical. Emirates' new Airbus A380 and Boeing 777 aircraft offer the ice sys- tem on larger personal TV screens with HD resolution: 27-inch in First Class, 20-inch in Business Class and 12.1 inch in Economy Class. Emirates currently operates daily scheduled flights between Malta and Dubai via Larnaca, Cyprus. Prestigious design award for new Kia Sorento KIA Motors continues to reel in awards for its outstanding design. Now the Kia Sorento, the brand's flagship SUV, has received the prestig- ious 'iF Design Award' for the first time. The jury of the glo- bally-recognised design awards programme honoured the third gen- eration of the Sorento, which goes on sale across Europe later on this year, with an award in the Product category. As well as awarding the car for the overall quality of its design, the jury rated the car on criteria such as fin- ish, degree of innovation, environ- mental impact and safety. The all-new Kia Sorento is the seventh Kia model to secure an iF Design Award. In every year since 2010, at least one of the coveted awards has been scooped by Kia Motors, with previous winners from the brand including the Kia Venga, Sportage, Optima, Picanto, pro_cee'd and Soul. "I am very proud of this award for the Kia Sorento because it is recog- nition of the great advance in qual- ity we have succeeded in achieving in this model," said Peter Schreyer, President and Chief Design Officer of Kia Motors Corporation. "The Kia Sorento unites the clas- sic poise of an SUV with a premium look and feel that is particularly tangible in the cabin. It offers the very highest design quality and excellent value for money. This is largely the achievement of our in- ternational design teams – which is also why I am so delighted with this award." The new Kia Sorento was de- veloped by the Kia design team in Namyang, Korea, assisted by the Kia Design Centres in Frankfurt, Germany, and Irvine, California. The new Kia Sorento is a stylish and practical SUV with exceptional versatility and practicality. The smoother, swept-back profile and deeply sculpted surfaces give the Kia Sorento a lithe, elegant appear- ance. The spacious interior follows the horizontal lines of the overall design concept and delivers a luxu- rious look and feel with top-quality materials throughout the cabin. The new Kia Sorento, which is available with five or seven seats, has a longer wheelbase and pro- vides more passenger room than its predecessor. The luggage area is larger, and thanks to the sliding, 60:40-split seat row it is even more versatile, holding up to 1,732 litres. High-tech specifications and a range of premium features, includ- ing the 360-degree Around View Monitor and smart parking system make it easy to manoeuvre and park. Buyers can also choose from the latest safety assistance systems, from lane departure warning to rear cross traffic alert and traffic sign recognition, through to adap- tive cruise control. Since it was launched in 1953, the annual iF Design Award has become one of the world's most important prizes for excellence in design. The award has its origins in the Formgerechte Industrieerzeug- nisse (Good Industrial Design) product shows initiated by the Hannover Messe, and is now one of the world's largest design competi- tions. The iF Design Award is presented in five disciplines. In 2015, compa- nies from 53 countries participated in the iF design awards programme, submitting 4,783 designs. The new Kia Sorento was honoured in the 'Automobiles / Vehicles / Bikes' cat- egory. Enter the Kia world by visiting Cars International, Mdina Road, Qormi.
