Earlier this week, customs offi- cials were surprised to find three stowaways during checks made on an SUV that arrived board a catamaran from Sicily. Suspecting that the RAV4 might be carrying goods that could be subject to the payment of excise duty, the officers were surprised to find three men hiding beneath some cardboard and inside the luggage booth. Three men, identified as 20-year-old Saltan Nagm, 22- year-old Ryad Alhmada and 27- year-old Ahmad Khalf, will be deported. Police have accused Malek Has- an of "ordering" Rennie Fava, of Haz-Zabbar, to bring the three Syrians to Malta. Fava and Hasan pleaded guilty to the charges. Hasan was sen- tenced two years in prison, sus- pended for four years while Fava was sentenced to 18 months in prison, suspended for four years. They were also fined €3,000 and €6,000 respectively. The race begins The Saluting Battery cannons at the Upper Barrakka gardens mark the start of the 36th edition of the Rolex Middle Sea Race. This year, 111 boats from 22 countries, are participating in the Rolex Middle Sea Race, which anti-clockwise course spans 608 Nautical miles. Starting from the Valletta Grand Harbour, the fleet heads north along the eastern coasts of Sicily up towards the Straits of Messina. Once through the Straits, the course leads to the Aeolian Islands and the active volcano of Stromboli. Passing between Marettimo and Favignana the crews head south towards the island of Lampedusa leaving Pantelleria to port. The fleet then turns northeast towards the South Comino Channel and the finish at Marsamxett Harbour.
