The young hammer thrower of Pembroke Athleta, Martina Ma- mo who competes in the youth category, improved the National Record which she had estab- lished last year with nearly three more metres, to 32.88m mark. In the same event, Catriona Cuschieri of St. Patrick 's AC improved her own record which she established the Saturday be- fore by more than four metres. The new National Record for the Intermediate category now stands at 34.04 metres. In the men's hammer throw, Mario Mifsud of St. Aloysius, the current record holder was beaten by former record holder, Rashid Chouhal of AS Libertas. Both athletes produced some very good throws to keep the competition exiting until the fi- nal round. In the women's discus throw, the young St. Patrick 's thrower Catriona Cuschieri who com- petes in the U18 (intermediate) category beat the veteran of this event and national record hold- er Antonella Chouhal, with a 38.73m throw. In the men's discus throw, the battle was between the two young Pembroke Athleta team mates, Bradley Mifsud and Luke Farrugia. Both took the lead at some point during the event but it was Luke Farru- gia who produced the longest throw on the day and braking the National Record once again with a huge 48.51m throw at his final round of the competi- tion. Luke will be representing Malta in the European Win- ter Throwing Cup which will be held between 12th to 13th March in Arad, Romania. He will be competing in the U23 category. In the javelin throw, Joanne Vella of Pembroke Athleta showed to be at top form by throwing over 40m again in this competition while Law- rence Ransley of Pembroke Athleta as well, won the shot put competition with a stand- ing throw of 13.75m. All the three athletes who established new records and the other Pembroke Athleta throwers are coached by Genz Dapi, national coach for throw- ing events. Luke Farrugia - Discus record holder
