Cortes, Consul General Philippines and Salem Obaidalla, Emirates Senior Vice President - Aeropolitical & Industry Affairs GSK Malta supports global health awareness campaign Healthy Lungs for Life GSK Malta is supporting the Eu- ropean Respiratory Society (ERS) and the European Lung Foun- dation (ELF) as partners of the global health initiative, Healthy Lungs for Life (HLf L). The campaign seeks to reduce the number of people living with respiratory disease by raising awareness of lung conditions and ways to prevent lung damage. HLf L highlights the impor- tance of physical activity with its 'Take the Active Option' theme, which ref lects the growing body of evidence supporting the im- portance of regular physical ac- tivity for lung health. To mark the change in sea- son and in support of this year's theme, GSK Malta is driving a better understanding and appre- ciation of lung health. "The importance of healthy, ac- tive living should not be underes- timated. Regular physical activi- ty can improve quality of life and can reduce the risk of long-term lung diseases. GSK is proud to partner with the European Res- piratory Society and European Lung Foundation on their cam- paign to support people to make positive changes to improve their symptoms, quality of life and reduce their long-term risk of living with asthma and COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease)," Mario Sciberras, Gen- eral Manager, GSK Malta said. One in eight of all deaths in the EU every year, are due to respira- tory diseases and the total cost, including the value of disability- adjusted life-years, lost to res- piratory disease is estimated at a minimum of €380 billion. It is estimated that around 235 million people in the world currently have asthma, and 329 million people are living with COPD. In Malta, asthma and COPD combined affect 13% of the population. "Respiratory diseases such as asthma and COPD can often be alleviated by building a small amount of physical activity into a daily routine. Small actions like these can make a substan- tial impact on respiratory health and help people overcome the daily challenges that they face living with respiratory disease," Sciberras said. As leaders in respiratory health, GSK is committed to im- proving the lives of those living with asthma, COPD and other related illnesses. Asthma and COPD combined have a huge economic, social and personal impact, yet much of this can be prevented. HSBC Malta supports Earth Hour HSBC Malta sold candles in aide of cancer children at the Rainbow Ward HSBC Malta has joined more than 200 global sites of the Bank and marked the annual WWF Earth Hour, by switching off all non-essential lights at the Qormi Operations Centre and the Swa- tar UK Contact Centre for one hour. Since 2009, HSBC has been a high profile supporter of the Earth Hour. During last year's Earth Hour, 600 employees and their families took part in the Dubai Earth Hour Walk, whilst in Mexico, staff members lit up the WWF Earth Hour logo by pedal- ling stationary bikes to generate power. HSBC Malta also sponsored an information stand of the Minis- try for Sustainable Development, the Environment and Climate Change (MSDEC), which joined other countries around the globe to switch off non-essential lights for 60 minutes and hold special events. The stand, manned by Nature Trust, was stationed at Republic Street for three days and later moved to Castille Square on the day of Earth Hour. Nature Trust volunteers distributed f lyers and sold candles, the proceeds from which will be directed to the 'Rainbow Ward', the cancer unit for children at the state hospital. "HSBC is a leader in provid- ing sustainable financing to help build a low-carbon future. Private finance is essential to achieving the goals set out in the universal climate change agreement signed in Paris last year," HSBC Malta CEO Andrew Beane said.
