The victim, a 37-year-old Co- lombian national who lived in Swieqi, succumbed to his inju- ries and died on Sunday morn- ing. The man reportedly suffered several blows to his head from the two men, and he was also hit with a glass before being rushed to hospital. Glphosate is considered as a "probable human carcinogen" and its licensing is regulated by the Comitology rules. The licences are due to expire at the end of June and the European Commission has to decide wheth- er such licences should be renewed or not. The Commission subsequently referred the matter to the Stand- ing Committee on Plant Protec- tion Products. "In the absence of scientific con- sensus regarding glyphosate, Mal- ta's original position was to abstain and recommended the possibility of implementing more stringent conditions in the licensing regimes at a national level," a spokesperson for Environment Minister José Herrera said in a statement. "Today, however, the Govern- ment has decided to further ap- ply the precautionary principle and, therefore, Malta should vote against the renewal of such licenc- es." Labour MEP Miriam Dalli was the only Maltese euro parliamen- tarian not to vote in favour of an EP resolution calling for a seven- year re-authorisation. According to the spokesperson, Herrera has now directed the com- petent national authority to in- form the Commission accordingly. "For the Maltese Government, environmental issues are definitely a priority," the Ministry for the En- vironment said.
