Under the direction of interna- tional guest conductor David Wat- kin, the combined musicians of the Malta Youth Orchestra (MYO) and Malta Philharmonic Orches- tra (MPO) will perform a diverse programme of classical music in- cluding selections from Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet Suite, Shostako- vich's Jazz Suite, Mars from Holst's The Planets and music from Star Wars. With the aim of training talented young orchestral musi- cians and providing the opportu- nity for them to develop their am- bition and aspirations, the Malta Youth Orchestra made its first public appearance in 2004. Since its inception, the MYO has enjoyed a busy schedule and has made no- table appearances during Notte Bianca and at the Ziguzajg Festival. The MYO will be collaborating with the Lisa Maria Foundation in order to raise awareness of the work that it does in safeguarding children and young people. Maria Blanco, who is responsible for di- recting the training programme of the Malta Youth Orchestra, said that "together with conductor Da- vid Watkin, we have chosen some very special repertoire for this con- cert, which gives the young musi- cians an opportunity to challenge themselves and develop their skills, whilst also being a very interesting and enjoyable programme for the public".
