maltatoday, WEDNESDAY, 29 JUNE 2016 17 Events HSBC Water Programme supports EU's 'We Eat Responsibly' initiative AMIDST the increasing link of food consumption with climate impact becoming evident, the HSBC Water Programme – Catch the Drop has joined hands with Nature Trust Malta in supporting an EU project, We Eat Responsi- bly. We Eat Responsibly is being run in nine European countries with a theme of responsible food consumption. This is the first time that the growing influence of HS- BC Water Programme – Catch the Drop in changing attitudes toward conservation has led to a tie-up with a similar programme with an- other organisation. The United Nations Environ- ment Programme (UNEP)'s in- ternational panel of sustainable resource management has previ- ously reported that current dietary habits are unsustainable and are playing a role in climate change. The food we grow has an envi- ronmental impact in terms of use of natural resources. Water is an essential resource and needs to be factored in every decision for food production. The water conservation cam- paign is financing the projects of four schools who are taking steps to reengineer food production and consumption under the Nature Trust programme. The supported schools are Dingli Primary School: where a new wa- ter tank will now collect rain water and irrigate crops; Birkirkara Mid- dle School: two rainwater collect- ing tanks will be used for irrigation; St Michael School in Sta Venera: where a new efficient irrigation sys- tem will be installed in the school's garden; and Birżebbuġa Primary School; which will be helped to col- lect rainwater to irrigate vegetables being planted by pupils. We Eat Responsibly was launched in June 2015 with the active par- ticipation of 14 schools. Among the participants, four schools were re- ferred to the support of HSBC Wa- ter Programme – Catch the Drop as their proposals addressed the important element of water con- servation in the food cycle. The event gives local artists the opportunity to collaborate with Red Bull to exhibit and promote their works of art and also puts them in the running to visit an international street art festival. The six chosen finalists, who will participate in the first edi- tion of the event in Malta, were chosen by a panel of judges fol- lowing an open call which saw over 40 applicants put their names forward for the event. Chris 'SeaPuppy' Jensen, Mal- colm Alden, Glenn Ellul, Lara Manara, Cheryl Bilocca and Francesco Morana were selected as the finalists to take part in the design competition. Their Can- vas Cooler artwork will be exhib- ited at New York Best, Miracles, MedAsia, Café Rouge, Café del Mar and Mojo in Gozo. Glenn Ellul, one of the chosen artists said, "I am thrilled to have been awarded the opportunity to collaborate with Red Bull Cu- rates. I feel lucky to have been paired up with Sliema's Medasia Lounge since I am familiar with their interior and overall vibe. I feel confident that I can create a cooler which truly captures their essence." Art student Cheryl Bilocca said, "I feel overwhelmed to have been given this opportu- nity. Since I am relatively new in the art scene, I think this project will help me to gain more con- fidence and open up new chal- lenges. As an artist, I usually do abstract work, hence, for my cooler, I was planning on work- ing mostly with the f low of colour and vibracy." The artists now have a month to complete their works of art, with an exhibition of their final masterpiece being held at Café del Mar on Wednesday 20th Ju- ly. During the exhibition night, guests will vote for their favour- ite cooler and the artist with the most votes will be f lown to Swe- den for the International Street Art Festival.
