21 Sport MOTORSPORTS maltatoday, WEDNESDAY, 14 DECEMBER 2016 ASMK Car Demolition this Sunday at Ta' Qali THE "Assocjazzjoni Sport Muturi u Karozzi" will be organizing the annual special Christmas event this coming Sunday. As in previous years this event will be held to raise money for l-iStrina. In this ASMK 23rd edition of the event the programme will include the first races of the Autocross and Motocross of the ASMK Pasta Poi- atti 2016/2017 National Champion- ships. The day's programme starts as early as 10am and is planned to end with the Car Demolition Derby starting at 3:30pm. Though the Demolition competi- tors are finding it very difficult to buy old cars for this 'Once in a Year' event, 14 competitors have regis- tered for this competition. Most of these drivers are repeaters in this game so it is difficult to forecast a winner and a Runner-Up. Though car smashing is the role of this game, there are special Safety Rules to prevent driver injury. Such pre- ventive rules are to be observed by all drivers during and to the end of the Demolition Derby. In the mean- time, the association takes all safety measures to prevent injury. Meanwhile, yesterday Republic Day the Trials section within ASMK started the National Trials Champi- onship. Despite being a small sec- tion within the ASMK, ten competi- tors registered for this event, being divided into two classes. Among the expert competitors Antonio Leon- ardi, a former Sicily champion in this sport competed in this Expert Class. This event was held at the tal- Ballut hard-rock quarry at San Pawl tat-Targa. In Class A the competitors had six sections to combat against. Yet Damon Bonello on a Gas Gas motorcycle made a good start and was followed by Rowen Bonello on a Beta and Antonio Leonardi on another Gas Gas motorcycle. The contest between these two competi- tors eased in the fifth section when Rowen Bonello gained some penalty points thus easing the pressure for Leonardi who now was runner-up to Danon. Leonardi advanced to 2nd place to the final result, leaving Damon Bonello win his first event of this new 2016-2017 championship in Class A. Leonardi won second place while Damon Bonello had to be content with third place. In Class B real competition was generated between four competi- tors, mainly between Tony Curmi and Daniel Inguanez both on a Beta motorcycle, and between Manuel Camilleri on his Gas Gas and the Sherco of Dennis Grech. Through- out the day's event the four competi- tors remained always close to each other, with Camilleri and Curmi as leaders, while Inguanez and Grech followed. The last section in the day's entire completion was decisive as to who will win this class and add the maxi- mum points in the final result. The event finished with Curmi winning, followed by Camilleri and Inguanez in second and third places respec- tively. Meanwhile the Association ASMK published the Calendar of Events for the Autocross, the Motocross, the Trials and the Enduro Champion- ship races with the dates throughout the year 2017.
