Honda endured a tough return to F1 with McLaren in 2015 and, while it made steady improve- ments through 2016, remained adrift of engine rivals Mercedes, Ferrari and Renault. However, for 2017, manufac- turers have been given freedom to overhaul their units and bring updates to the track as they wish, after the controversial to- ken system was scrapped. McLaren technical chief Tim Goss recently revealed that Honda has "redesigned " its pow- er unit, with engine architecture and layout altered to improve performance and packaging. Hasegawa, speaking to Autos- port, said: "The concept is com- pletely different. "It's very high risk, we don't know a lot of things about that new concept." Addressing when gains are likely to be felt, he commented: "We know it will give us a per- formance advantage, but the biggest risk is whether we can realise that potential this year." Hasegawa added that the In- ternal Combustion Engine (ICE) remains a priority. "We need to concentrate on the ICE for this year," he went on to state. "If we improve the engine it- self, which means boosting ex- haust gas energy, we need to boost the turbine otherwise we cannot perform at the same lev- el in terms of deployment. "We still have to do some tests and there will be some trial and error. "I hope we have understood the direction and the [power unit] elements to focus on, but it's not easy to combine the elements to realise the improvements on the ICE completely." McLaren will field Fernando Alonso and Stoffel Vandoorne in 2017.
