22 maltatoday, WEDNESDAY, 1 MARCH 2017 Sport MOTORSPORTS PHOTOGRAPHY BY MARIO MICALLEF Dwarna with Mariella Dimech every Tuesday at 21.00 on TVM2 Autocross and Motocross races on Sunday at Ta' Qali THE Assocjazzjoni Sport Muturi u Karozzi will be holding the fourth event of the ASMK & Pasta Poi- atti 2016/2017 National Champi- onships this coming Sunday. The Autocross and Motocross will be participating in this event. Also included in the day's pro- gramme ASMK will be holding a Flat Track Motorcycle Race where a number of specially equipped motorcycles will be doing their first races on the Autocross track. This will be happening as a trial race and if successful the association will be considering organising more com- petitive events for these bikers too. The day's programme starts at 11am. Meanwhile last Sunday the as- sociation held the second event for Trials Motorcycles. This event took place in a quarry in Fawwara, limits of Siggiewi where 10 Trials competitors challenged the natu- ral obstacles set on the day. They were divided into two classes, one for novices and another class for expert riders. In Class A riders Damon Bonello and Antonio Leonardi both on Gas Gas motorbikes, and Rowen Bonel- lo on Beta were battling between them to top up the score board. During the first section of riding over natural terrain Damon and Leonardi gained equal in points but in the second section Leonardi just fell back and Rowen entered the scene following Damon. The battle for the lead continued during the third section where the three riders performed a 'Clean' section. From the fourth section onwards Damon made every ef- fort to defend the lead of this class and he managed to finish the day with Clean rides in the last three sections on the day. Thus, Damon was declared winner of the day, followed by Leonardi in 2nd place. Third place was won by Rowen while Nick Farrugia on a Gas Gas placed 4th in Class. In Class B Tony Curmi on a Beta and Manuel Camilleri on a Gas Gas battled for the lead although in several sections they gained equal points. Curmi performed well in the second and third sections and gained the lead in this class. Finally Curmi won this Class with only 36 penalty points to Camilleri's 44 points of penalty. Dennis Grech on his Sherco motorcycle placed third in Class B. Meanwhile a quick look at the Autocross Classification after three events in the Modified Class we find that Gordon Johnson on Opel Corsa is leading this class with 74 points. He is followed by Philip Joe Vella on his Opel Corsa with 65 points. Karl Micallef on Ford Fiesta and the Opel Corsa of Joseph Micallef are both placed 3rd with 62 points each. In the Autocross Standard Class the game is very hot as the first three competitors are very close to each other in the points total. We find that the Citroen AX driven by Deane Farrugia tops the scale with 25 points. Ian Fenech on another Citroen AX is placed 2nd with 24 points while third placed Nicovich Chircop on his Peugeot 206 gained 22 points so far. Fourth place is occupied by two competitors – Melvin Buttigieg on his Citroen AX and Scicluna Karl on his Peuge- ot 106 both have 19 points each.
