maltatoday, WEDNESDAY, 29 MARCH 2017 17 Events ACCA renews the JES agreement with the Malta Institute of Accountants ACCA (the Association of Char- tered Certified Accountants) and the Malta Institute of Account- ants (MIA) are proud to announce the renewal of the Joint Examina- tion Schemes (JES) and signing of a new partnership agreement. ACCA and MIA have JES cover- ing both the ACCA Qualification and ACCA's Foundations in Ac- countancy suite of qualifications. Through the JES, ACCA and MIA deliver globally accepted qualifications with local recogni- tion and relevance. Students that complete the ACCA JES in Malta are able to satisfy the exam crite- ria for membership of both bodies simultaneously. Leo Lee, deputy president of ACCA and Franco Azzopardi, President of MIA met in Malta on the 8 March to renew the JES for a further five years until 2022, and to sign an enhanced partnership agreement between the two bod- ies. "Our agreement with the ACCA provides Maltese professional ac- countants with business-relevant, first-choice qualifications that serve as the base-line of a higher calibre for a rewarding career in accountancy, finance and man- agement," said Franco Azzopardi. "From being an examining body for several decades to partnering with ACCA, the objectives of the MIA remain that of attracting talented individuals to the profes- sion, offering them a qualification route and eventually get them on board as Members." "I am pleased to be further strengthening the relationship between ACCA and MIA with a new partnership agreement," Leo Lee said. "This partnership will enhance the reputation and influ- ence of both ACCA and MIA in Malta, and will allow us to jointly identify opportunities to promote and develop the accountancy pro- fession. I look forward to continu- ing to co-operate and collaborate with MIA." The Kellogg's- sponsored #OnTheMove Skolas- port programme is designed to help the participants develop from a young age the skills needed to compete at competitive levels. Ruben Baldacchino, SportMalta Head Coach at Cottonera Sports Complex, said: "Basketball is one of the most demanding sports when it comes to cardiovascular conditioning and it's an entertain- ing form of exercise for many chil- dren. Whether you're grabbing a rebound, dribbling while keeping your eyes on what's around you, passing to a teammate or shooting the ball, your brain is working just as hard as the rest of your body." Mr Baldacchino further ex- plained how playing basketball at an early age sets children up for future achievements in situations that require teamwork, such as group projects in school or meet- ings at work. "A dozen players workings to- wards the same goal requires sac- rifice, unselfishness and teamwork. Learning how to work together with others is a vital skill in life that goes far beyond sports," he added. #OnTheMove Skolasport is or- ganised by SportMalta and spon- sored by Kellogg's, the world's lead- ing producer of breakfast cereal. Skolasport offers training in vari- ous sports complexes and localities giving participants the opportu- nity to choose their favourite sport and place of training. Kellogg's is sponsoring #OnTheMove Skolasport for the 17th consecutive year as part of its commitment to promote physical activities and the importance of a balanced diet among the Maltese community. For further information about basketball classes, or any other sport disciplines practiced at #OnTheMove SkolaSport, one can contact the Programmes Section at the SportMalta Head Office on tel. 2203 6000 or via e-mail: pro- grammes@sportmalta.org.mt or visit the SportMalta website: www. sportmalta.org.mt. At the end of the basketball sessions, the participants are divided into teams and play a series of games to practice their skills Turn your plastic caps into funds for l-Istrina COLLECTING plastic caps of bot- tled water, soft drinks, jerry cans, detergent bottles and other plastic tops is a relatively easy way how one can generate more money for l-Istri- na 2017. The plastic caps collected can be dropped off at the near- est school or where the 'Nirriċikla għall-Istrina' sticker is displayed at establishments in one's respective locality. This was stated by the President of the GreenPak Coop Victor Galea during the launch of its yearly suc- cessful campaign 'Nirriċikla għall- Istrina 2017'. He said that "in 2011, GreenPak Coop Society started an innovative educational campaign, encouraging school children to col- lect plastic caps for recycling. Today this initiative became a nationwide programme, a testimony that the public takes action to recycling cor- rectly and at the same time help to turn caps into funds for charity." During last year's l-Istrina, GreenPak presented a cheque of €20,000 to the Malta Community Chest Fund Foundation. Almost 43 tonnes, which is equivalent to over 14 million bottle plastic caps, were collected for recycling in 2016. These were collected from 144 schools, and 52 other entities in- cluding scout groups, social organi- sations, clubs, companies and Local Councils. Five schools namely: Gozo Col- lege San Lawrenz Primary, St Fran- cis School St Paul's Bay, Helen Keller Resource Centre, St Benedict Col- lege Ħal Għaxaq Primary School and the San Ġorġ Preca College Valletta Primary were awarded with a trophy at San Anton Palace in the presence of The President of Malta HE Marie Louise Coleiro Preca and Minister for Sustainable Develop- ment, the Environment and Climate Change, José Herrera. In addition, the St Benedict Col- lege Ħal Għaxaq Primary School has also received an official certifi- cate from the Malta Records organ- isation in recognition for collecting the highest total amount of plastic caps for 5 consecutive years. In to- tal, over the past five years, the stu- dents managed to collect 9,414 kg of plastic caps. GreenPak also received a certificate from Malta Records in recognition for collecting the largest amount of plastic caps ever collect- ed from the Maltese Islands. The President of Malta, Marie Louise Coleiro Preca praised Green- Pak's yearly initiative which drives more recycling of plastics, helps to protect the environment, and at the same time raises funds for the Malta Community Chest Fund Founda- tion. She also presented a certifi- cate to the BOV Centre and to the Żurrieq Local Council for collecting the highest amount of plastic caps in last year's campaign, from amongst the registered companies and Local Councils, respectively. "Today is a celebration involving our children and our young people at schools. It is a strong statement of what is happening in our society where children and young people are much more aware of the envi- ronment. They feel the need of be- ing active and not passive, in order to help the environment and not let it deteriorate. It is also a statement that this initiative, part of which is new, is no longer associated with schools only, but also associated with the industry. This means that if the industry fully participates, from an environmental point of view it would be truly effective for the benefit of our environment. I would like to strengthen this syn- ergy, so that altogether we take care of our environment effectively, and through this initiative we help those in need," Coleiro Preca said. Last year GreenPak introduced businesses and social organisations to the scheme. Interested schools, companies, establishments and social organisations can register with GreenPak by emailing char- lene@greenpak.com.mt or online w w w.greenpak.com.mt/istrina- caps-campaign. A registration fee applies which will go towards the charity fund. GreenPak provides the businesses/organisations with free sacks and collection services. Each registered establishment will be identified by a 'Nirriċikla għall- Istrina' sticker and their clients can drop-off their plastic caps at their premises for recycling. More information about GreenPak can be obtained from www.green- pak.com.mt or on tel. No: 21661081.
