maltatoday, SUNDAY, 9 APRIL 2017 Events 43 The Farsons Brewery recently hosted its newly appointed area designate agent for the region of Sicily together with a select group of new and potential Farsons beer distributors that collectively cover key provinces of Sicily. The brewery plans to focus on further expanding its extended range of beers and packages into this market, which includes the Cisk and Farsons Classic Brews range, flanked by a new drive to introduce bottled as well as draught. "Through the appointment of an agent and a network of distribu- tors we now have an increased focus and expanded coverage of outlets and key sales points that will bring our proud range of beers to many more Sicilian beer drinkers," Peter Mercieca, Head of International Business (Europe), said. "For both the brewery and this market, new and interesting beginnings are underway." A tour of the brewery, an exten- sive tasting session and a World Cup qualifier filled the two-day agenda, finished off with a visitors' group photo with the Farsons' ex- port team, taken on the steps of the main entrance to the brewery. A project using the art of shadow puppetry, light, music and science to recount a story was launched this week within the Science The- atre at Esplora Interactive Science Centre at Kalkara. Shadows of Malta's Times is a one-hour show aimed at primary school children, fully financed by the Maltese Presidency of the Council of the European Union. Esplora's outreach team will be visiting primary state schools dur- ing April and May 2017. The project was led by Austrian dramaturg Martina Winkel, who wrote the original script, in collab- oration with the narrator Abigail Williams, musician Ian Caruana and puppeteer Sarah Galea. This shadow puppetry project aligns events, understood as com- ponents of the timeline of Maltese history, to present a bigger coher- ent image of contemporary Malta as it bridges the arts with the sci- ences and weaves them into one narrative which becomes part of Malta's culture. Shadow theatre in itself is full of scientific concepts related to op- tics, shadows, transparent/non- transparent materials, and colours. This project presents the coun- try's unique cultural milieu as a rich hybrid bridging the varied art forms and artistic expressions. The latter shall see the concept of 'water' as its basic and underlying theme since water was the medium by which most empires came to Malta. Water is also symbolic with the Mediterranean and migration, while it is also the basic require- ment for 'life' as we know it. The theme of water also reflects the underlying main theme of the 2017 Maltese Presidency of the Council of the EU, where Migra- tion, the Mediterranean and the Maritime sector hold centre-stage. The executive chairman of the Malta Council for Science and Technology said that Esplora be- lieves science is an integral part of everything around us and in all ac- tivities we engage in. "All visitors, whether students or families, experience science as relevant, exciting, enjoyable and personally attainable, and the cen- tre encourages people to be in- trigued, discuss and engage with science and technology," he said. "We strive to see a cultural change whereby science is regarded as en- joyable, enticing, intriguing and ac- cessible to all." He said that one of the Centre's aims was to bridge the gap between Art and Science by communicating and embracing science through the Arts. Esplora director Rachael Black- burn said that the collaborative project encompassed the emerging concept of STEAM, which aligns Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics. "Art brings the additional factor of creativity within the research and innovation sphere and – as such and whenever possible – such collaborations are encouraged at Esplora," she said.
