maltatoday, TUESDAY, 9 MAY 2017 A fire broke out at an old peo- ple's home in BuÄĦibba on Monday evening. The Police media and communi- cations unit confirmed that a they were informed of the fire at Casa San Paola at 6.50pm. The home is run by Care Malta and has an oc- cupancy of some 200 people. Initial reports by witnesses on site described a chaotic scene in Triq it-Turisti as fire fighters at- tempted to battle the fire. Several elderly people could be seen waiting in the balconies to be rescued by members of the civil protection department. The rescue was complicated by a technical fault to the ladder being used by civil protection person- nel. The latest reports at the time of going to print indicated that the fire started in the home's laundry room. News istro Man, 44, crushed to death by elevator A magisterial inquiry has been launched into the death of a man who was crushed by an el- evator yesterday. According to the Police's communications office, the police were informed of the accident around 6.30pm. The accident occurred in Triq Dun Frans Camilleri in Hamrun. A medical team and mem- bers of the Civil Protection Department were immediately dispatched to the scene where they found the 44-year-old vic- tim crushed underneath the lift. He was certified dead on site. Amongst other things, the in- quiry will have to establish how and why the man found himself under the lift. MaltaToday un- derstands that the man was not a maintenance worker. Fire breaks out at old people's home Motorcyclist suffers grievous injuries in tal-Barrani A 48-year old motorcy- clist from Haz-Zabbar was admitted to Mater Dei on Monday evening and was certified as having suffered grievous injuries, following a collision in Triq il-Barra- ni, iz-Zejtun. According to the Police Communications Unit, the police were informed of an incident at 4.00pm and immediately arrived at the scene to find that a colli- sion had taken place be- tween a Toyota Corsa and a Daelim motorcycle. The Toyota was being driven by a 27-year old Syrian national residing in Paola. An ambulance was called on site, and took the cyclist to Mater Dei Hospital for treatment. A police investigation in- to the incident took place.
