maltatoday, MONDAY, 5 JUNE 2017 BRITISH Prime Minister The- resa May has promised to step up the fight against Islamist terrorism in the aftermath of the London Bridge attack, say- ing "enough is enough" and warning that there has been "far too much tolerance of ex- tremism" in the UK. The Prime Minister's com- ments were made outside No 10 on Sunday morning after chairing a meeting of the Co- bra committee convened in the wake of the shocking at- tack in the centre of the capi- tal in which seven people were killed. She mooted the idea of harsh- er punishments and longer prison terms for terrorism of- fences, including relatively mi- nor ones. May also said internet com- panies must not give extrem- ism a place to exist, but added that there was also a need to tackle "safe spaces in the real world", which, she said, would require "difficult" conversa- tions. Islamist militancy was the common thread that linked the otherwise unconnected at- tacks on London Bridge, West- minster and Manchester, she said. "It is an ideology that is a perversion of Islam and a per- version of the truth," she said. "Defeating this ideology is one of the great challenges of our time. But it cannot be defeated through military intervention alone." The recent spate of attacks showed the UK was experienc- ing a new trend in the threat it faced, she said. "It is time to say enough is enough," May continued. "Eve- rybody needs to go about their lives as they normally would. Our society should continue to function in accordance with our values. But when it comes to taking on extremism and terrorism, things need to change." Terrorism bred terrorism and perpetrators were being in- spired to attack, not only on the basis of carefully-planned plots and not even as lone attackers who are radicalised online, but also by copying one another, said the head of Britain's Con- servative government. May said action was needed in the UK as well as overseas "While we have made signifi- cant progress in recent years, there is – to be frank – far too much tolerance of extremism in our country.
