maltatoday SUNDAY 25 MARCH 2018 32 This Week WHAT'S ON EXHIBITIONS UNTIL MARCH 29 Ħaġraisland Debut solo show by Isaac Azzo- pardi held at the Malta Society of Arts, Palazzo De La Salle, Valletta. Through the use of construction material, appropriation and rub- bing techniques, the show revolves around three main references: Aus- tin Camilleri's installation Stones from 1999, as Maltese contempo- rary art canon, Anselm Kiefer's ide- as about art as alchemy and Malta's changing urbanity. Opening hours are 08:30 – 19:00 (Monday to Fri- day); 08:30 – 13:30 (Saturday). UNTIL APRIL 21 Except for Access Only Exhibition by artist-architect Tom Van Maldaren at Malta Contempo- rary Art, Valletta. Malderen pre- sents a series of objects that due to denominations of scale, materiality and context sit somewhere between sculptural objects and architectural models - at a juncture between the field of architecture and that of art. While many of the reflections that have made their way in the exhibi- tion can be traced back to architec- ture, they feel equally relevant and stimulating when brought into an art context. Opening hours: Tues- day - Friday (13:00 – 18:00); Satur- day 10:00 – 13:00. APRIL 4-MAY 2 Terrae Exhibition of works by Victor Agius at Iniala5 Galleries, Old Treasury Street Valletta. Agius examines the formless matter proper to his own experience of the environment – either ran- domly or carefully selected sites with their distinctive ecologi- cal and archeological features – which all finds its roots in the earth or soil-derived organic materials (raw clay, for instance, beside natural pigments, oils and acrylics). This has allowed him to produce a body of work through which to ref lect upon the subject of human existence in general and the limits of his own exist- ence in particular. Selected by Franziska von Stenglin, Grass: A Nation's Bat- tle for Life is an early work by the filmmakers of King Kong. In 1924, neophyte filmmakers Meri- an C. Cooper and Ernest B. Sch- oedsack hooked up with journal- ist and sometime spy Marguerite Harrison and set off to film an ad- venture. They found excitement, danger and unparalleled drama in the migration of the Bakhtiari tribe of Persia (now Iran). Twice a year, more than 50,000 people and half a million animals sur- mounted seemingly impossible obstacles to take their herds to pasture. The event forms part of the Kinemastik Film Club. PUBLIC TALK APRIL 18 Salvage and Salvation: Bookbindings as Agents Public talk on the art of book- binding by Professor Nicholas Pickwoad at Lecture Theatre 2, University of Malta, Tal-Qroqq. The making of books in the early modern period was a highly com- mercial activity and the need to cut costs is evidenced by the widespread use of recycled mate- rials, particularly pieces of parch- ment, paper and leather salvaged from a myriad of other uses in li- braries, archives and daily life. In this way, binders preserved mate- rial that had been thrown away or otherwise discarded, much of it of historical interest, some of it of great cultural importance. Professor Pickwoad trained in bookbinding and book conserva- tion with Roger Powell, and ran his own workshop from 1977 to 1989, and has been Adviser on book conservation to the Nation- al Trust since 1978. CONFERENCE APRIL 6-8 The Post-Literary Conference organised under the auspices of the publication CounterText, held at the Uni- versity of Malta, Tal-Qroqq. The theme ref lects Counter- Text's subtitle, A Journal for the Study of the Post-Literary. It is also an opportunity to explore, refine and critique the ration- ale proposed by the journal in its very first Editorial: http:// w w w.e u pp u b l i s h i n g .c om /do i / ab s/10 . 33 6 6/cou nt . 2 015 . 0 0 02 . The papers will analyse literary works (literary, post-literary and otherwise) seen as symptomatic of, or countering, this rationale. TODAY Times of Dilemma Two megaphones – one placed next to St Roche Chapel at St Mi- chael's Counterguard in Valletta, and the other across the harbour, on the public foreshore of (the mostly privatised) Manoel Island – will be used to transmit contemporary Għana dialogue, address- ing current urban and social issues on the Island. The dialogue, which will be sung between a 320-metre distance, was conceived through a participatory process which brought together Għana singers (Għannejja), authors, activists and experts from diverse backgrounds. Performers include għannejja: Il-Bukku Vince, An- gelo Theuma, Maria Aguis, Josmick Agius and guitarists John Saliba, Victor Grech and Frans Casha. Texts written by Maltese authors Jean Paul Borg, Jo Burden, Immanuel Mifsud, were then transformed into contemporary Għana dialogues by the young Għannejja-Rapper Rachelle Deguara, and Għannejja l-Bukku Vince, Angelo Theuma, Maria Aguis and Josmick Agius. Times of Dilemma forms part of the exhibition Dal-Baħar Madwarha /The Island is what the Sea Surrounds, curated by Maren Richter an ar- tistic journey explores Malta's 'Islandness'.
