maltatoday WEDNESDAY 11 APRIL 2018 THIS WEEK 15 WHAT'S ON EXHIBITIONS UNTIL APRIL 17 Phnom Penh: The Struggling Smiles Exhibition and book launch by photographer Jacob Sammut at the Malta Postal Museum, Archbishop Street, Valletta. Exhibition launch took place on April 6. UNTIL APRIL 21 Except for Access Only Exhibition by artist-architect Tom Van Maldaren at Malta Contemporary Art, Valletta. Malderen presents a series of objects that due to denominations of scale, materiality and context sit somewhere between sculptural objects and architectural models - at a juncture between the field of architecture and that of art. While many of the reflections that have made their way in the exhibition can be traced back to architecture, they feel equally relevant and stimulating when brought into an art context. Opening hours: Tuesday - Friday 13:00 – 18:00; Saturday 10:00 – 13:00. UNTIL MAY 2 Terrae Exhibition of works by Victor Agius at Iniala5 Galleries, Old Treasury Street Valletta. Agius examines the formless matter proper to his own experience of the environment – either randomly or carefully selected sites with their distinctive ecological and archeological features – which all finds its roots in the earth or soil- derived organic materials (raw clay, for instance, beside natural pigments, oils and acrylics). This has allowed him to produce a body of work through which to reflect upon the subject of human existence in general and the limits of his own existence in particular. Her project 'How not to fight with the city' – which will be the focus of the presentation – will attempt to characterise a city which is multi-layered in history and in the cultures of its inhabitants. APRIL 18 Salvage and Salvation: Bookbindings as Agents Public talk on the art of bookbinding by Professor Nicholas Pickwoad at Lecture Theatre 2, University of Malta, Tal-Qroqq. The making of books in the early modern period was a highly commercial activity and the need to cut costs is evidenced by the widespread use of recycled materials, particularly pieces of parchment, paper and leather salvaged from a myriad of other uses in libraries, archives and daily life. In this way, binders preserved material that had been thrown away or otherwise discarded, much of it of historical interest, some of it of great cultural importance. Professor Pickwoad trained in bookbinding and book conservation with Roger Powell, and ran his own workshop from 1977 to 1989, and has been Adviser on book conservation to the National Trust since 1978. How Not to Fight with the City at Blitz, Valletta Fuzzhoneys will be performing at Rock the South
