maltatoday | WEDNESDAY • 11 JULY 2018 14 CULTURE Embassies connect through culture FOR the fourth year running the Ta' Xbiex Local Council will be hosting the cultural event "Connecting Through Culture". The event will be held this Saturday, the 14th of July in the Yacht Marina Car park. Testament of its popularity is the ever-increasing par- ticipation of embassies and consulates in an event which has become a yearly ap- pointment in the calendar of events and being frequented by many Maltese, expatri- ates and tourists. This activity brings to- gether people of different nationalities through cul- ture which is expressed via international and local per- formances from a variety of diplomatic missions and in- ternational artists who have their embassies or residenc- es in Ta' Xbiex. Moreover, this year's event will boast more embassies that are sit- uated outside this locality. As in previous years, each embassy and the Ta' Xbiex Local Council will represent the culture of their respec- tive nation through music, culture, dance and gastron- omy through various stands. The counties being repre- sented in this year's edition are Australia, Egypt, Ger- many, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Libya, Malta, Neth- erlands, Spain Turkey, UK. The new additions include China, Ghana, Kuwait and Russia. The event will also feature a children's area and a big screen showing the World Cup match just before the event. President Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca will be the pa- tron of this event aimed to celebrate cultural diversity. This year's event is support- ed by the Malta Tourism Authority, the Department for Local Government and Core Platform. Zurrieq Band leaves for Austrian International Festival SOĊJETÀ Mużikali Santa Ka- tarina V.M. of Żurrieq will be participating in the Mid Europe International Wind Music Fes- tival in Schladming Dachstein, Austria. St Catherine Band will be one of the 37 ensembles from all over the world taking part in the 21st edition, which is considered as one of the most important international fes- tivals for wind bands. Over 2,500 musicians from over 15 countries will meet in Schlad- ming, a small Alphine village at the foot of the Dachstein mountain in Austria, to per- form and experience wind music from around the world. Old, new, familiar and unfa- miliar, traditional and pro- gressive, regional and interna- tional music will be provided. This is the eighth inter- national participation of St Catherine Band after having visited Sicily for three times, Bari and Lucca (Italy), Bu- dapest (Hungary) and Black Forest (Germany). The Band, which is made up of 50 mu- sicians who all come from Żurrieq, will be accompanied by over 180 supporters for a group total of 234 persons. This is an example of local talent going global. St Catherine Band will be very active during the days of the festival and is expected to perform in an open-air con- cert during a night long ac- tivity, a formal concert at the Schladming Congress Hall as well as performing with all the participating bands in the tutti performance, when se- lected music will be played by all bands together in an arena.
