WWW.MALTATODAY.COM.MT WEDNESDAY EDITION €1.00 Newspaper post EDITORIAL • PAGE 9 WEDNESDAY • 12 SEPTEMBER 2018 • ISSUE 603 • PUBLISHED EVERY WEDNESDAY AND SUNDAY Deciphering Adrian Delia's tough talk on migration A lawyer for Opposition leader Adrian Delia has told a judge that Delia's role was being stultified by the Attorney General. Delia appeared in a court case he filed himself, in which he is demanding a copy of the Egrant inquiry report. The conclusions from Magistrate Aaron Bugeja's inquiry on the owner- ship of the secret Panamanian compa- ny Egrant were published in July. The Prime Minister has said that he wants the entire inquiry to be published de- spite the fact that the Attorney Gen- eral was against such a move. Judge Robert Mangion heard Delia's counsel, lawyer Vince Galea, say he had complied with the demand for a list of witnesses he was asked to provide. 6 7 Delia accuses AG of stultifying Opposition leader's role MATTHEW AGIUS LIAM Debono, 17, charged with at- tempted murder after running over and nearly killing a policeman, started using drugs at age 9, a court has heard. Magistrate Joe Mifsud, presiding the compilation of evidence against Debono, yesterday heard Inspector Malcolm Bondin testify. Debono had been stopped by RIU after he was spotted performing sus- picious manoeuvres, Bondin said and what police suspected to be drugs were found in his car. He had admit- ted that the substance was cannabis grass and that it was his. "He would smoke 3-4g every day… since age 9, as his mother would give it to him to keep him quiet." Magistrate Mifsud was told about a previous arrest where Debono had threatened a policeman who had stopped him for riding a bicycle that had no brakes or pedals. Lawyer Amadeus Cachia requested bail, pointing out that all witnesses have now testified. "There is definitely no chance of tampering with evidence, neither is there chance of escape from Malta." "Not only is Liam Debono presumed innocent, but just because he is charged with several offences it doesn't mean they're going to stay the same. Several times we have seen persons charged with homicide being downgraded to other offences. Let's say the AG feels that it should be an involuntary griev- ous injury charge instead of involun- tary homicide …the punishment is far lower than the present charges." The ship has been prevented from depart- ing from Malta over a dispute between EU Member States, Malta and Italy, related to the fate of a group of migrants rescued by the vessel the MV Lifeline which was fur- ther complicated by the fact that the vessel was only registered as a pleasure craft and lacked some necessary documentation. Malta's move, which has been supported by the European Commission and the Eu- ropean Council, has been widely interpret- ed to be a political act intended to assuage brittle relations between the two countries.
