15 maltatoday | WEDNESDAY • 20 FEBRUARY 2019 LISTINGS WHAT'S ON Theatre FEBRUARY 9 -24 The Acrobat The international stars of The Acrobat (Blood Ties), which will be staged for the first time in Malta next month by Uni- faun Theatre Productions, have arrived this week to start cast rehearsals. Professional actors Marco Michel from Switzer- land, Cody Hively from New York, Mark Windsor from the UK and Martin Szekely from Hungary have now joined lo- cal performers Jamie Cardona, Clayton Mallia and Rambert Attard in Malta, as well as top local director Stephen Oliver, to bring Agnes Moon's feel- good romantic comedy to life. The Acrobat (Blood Ties) by Unifaun Theatre Productions will be performed from 9 to 24 February 2019 at Spazju Kreat- tiv in Valletta. The production is supported by the MAF Pro- ject Fund of the Arts Council Malta. Tickets are available by visiting www.kreattivita.org FEBRUARY 8 – 24 Cats The Musical Hoi Polloi Theatre Produc- tions is proud to present a new theatre spectacular of Andrew Lloyd Webber's world famous musical, CATS. CATS tells the story of a tribe of cats called the Jellicles who meet on one special night each year to celebrate who they are. During the Jellicle Ball we get to know about the special traits and secrets of our feline friends, as they invite us through this lyrical journey based on T.S. Eliot's 'Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats' with some well- loved musical theatre classics including 'Memory' and 'The Magical Mr Mistoffelees'. This event signifies the first time the production will be live on stage in Malta and a comeback for the local production company on the occasion of their 15th an- niversary. The musical will take place at the Valletta Campus Theatre VCT between February 8 - 24. FEBRUARY 23 – 24 Il-Qtates ta' max-Xatt The cat's out of the bag! Teatru Malta are opening their 2019 programme with the highly anticipated children's opera Il- Qtates ta' max-Xatt on the 23rd and 24th of February in partner- ship with Festivals Malta. This magical piece is an adaptation of the much-loved children's book by Maltese author Clare Azzopardi, directed by Denise Mulholland and composed by Euchar Gravina. The opera, suit- able for children aged between 8 and 10 will be held at the historic Maritime Museum in Birgu. Music MARCH 4-10 Così Fan Tutte Teatru Manoel is staging a brand new production of Mo- zart's opera Così Fan Tutte on 4th, 6th, 8th and 10th March 2019. With Così fan tutte, os- sia La scuola degli amanti, the theatre concludes the brilliant opera trilogy of Le Nozze Di Figaro (produced in 2017) and Don Giovanni ( produced in 2018) resulting from the col- laboration between Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and librettist Lorenzo Da Ponte. The first of them, Le Nozze di Figaro (was premiered in Vienna on 1 May 1786 while Don Giovanni's was in Prague on 29 October 1787. Così fan tutte was to follow with a premiere in Vienna on 26 January 1790. This production is supported by Bank of Valletta. There are discounted tickets for those attending the opera. FEBRUARY 23 Cum Canto Oremus The Soċjetà Mużikali tal- Karmnu Balluta A.D. 1987 is go- ing to present Cum Canto Ore- mus (With Music We Pray), a Symphonic Concert and a Mes- sa Solenne alla Beata Vergine Maria on Saturday 23rd Febru- ary 2019 at the Metropolitan Cathedral of St Paul in Mdina at 8.00pm. This concert will be directed by the Assistant Band Director Mro Christopher Vel- la. The music and the mass are composted by the same Assis- tant Band Director Mro Chris- topher Vella. With the par- ticipation of Soprano Rosabelle Bianchi, Mezzo Soprano May Caruana, Tenore Charles Vin- centi, Baritone Pio Dalli, Singer Michela Dalli and Pianista John Cutajar. APRIL 12 Gianni Morandi Concert Gianni Morandi will be sing- ing live at the Malta Fairs and Conventions Centre in Tà Qali on April 12. The show will fea- ture more than 40 tracks from Morandi's repertoire forming a playlist that would retrace the fundamental stages of his 60-year career. They include Oc- chi di ragazza, Scende la pioggia, La fisarmonica, Non son degno di te, Uno su mille, Dobbiamo fare luce, and Una vita che ti sogno. These last two tracks are part of Morandi's 40th album D'Amore e D'Autore, in which Morandi interprets songs of love.The show starts at 9.30pm. JULY 10 Pink Floyd's Nick Mason live in Concert Rock 'N Malta are proud to present Pink Floyd's founding member Nick Mason and his band Saucerful of Secrets live in concert on the 10th of July at St.George's Square, Valletta. Nick Mason's Saucerful of Se- crets featuring Nick Mason, Gary Kemp, Guy Pratt, Lee Har- ris and Dom Beken is a unique opportunity to experience Pink Floyd's celebrated and signifi- cant early body of work played live including songs from al- bums 'The Piper At The Gates of Dawn' and 'A Saucerful Of Se- crets'. Tickets are available from www.kultura.mt EXHIBITIONS UNTIL FEBRUARY 28 The Immortals of a City The Immortals of a City show- cases 51 selected photos from the vast quantity of works, these photos are not objective records of the sculptures, but rather stunning reinventions inspired by lots of reading and reflection on historical documents. The exhibition seeks to convey the influence and charm of Euro- pean public artworks, by repre- senting sculptures of European cities through photography, of- fering visitors an extraordinary taste of glimpses captured in these European cities, and invit- ing one to reflect on life and mo- ments of history while progress- ing toward the future. It has been exhibited in Beijing, Qing- dao, Tianjin and other places in China, meeting with profound appreciation and interest in the historical, cultural and exotic diversity of the urban carvings, especially by many who have never been to Europe. FEBRUARY 1 – MARCH 23 Rosella Biscotti Exhibition Blitz is pleased to announce the opening of a solo show by internationally acclaimed art- ist Rossella Biscotti (Molfetta, 1978; live in Brussels and Ber- lin). The exhibition portrays the artist's practice with a selection of her key artworks along with a work in progress, her most am- bitious to date, originally pre- sented at Van Abbemuseum in Eindhoven (2016) and intended to be produced in Malta over the coming year. The show will be accompanied by a free illus- trated publication with an essay by the curator, visuals from the exhibition and more insights about the artworks. A public talk between the curator and the artist will take place on 2 Febru- ary 2019 at 5:30 pm, followed by drinks at the Blitz Bar. FESTIVALS MARCH 8 – APRIL 7 Gualitana Festival of Music "Gozo's main classical mu- sic festival" returns between 8 March and 7 April 2019. This year's edition promises to be an exciting programme of events focusing on the theme "Women in Society". Gaulitana will in- clude an eclectic mix of events with multifarious styles – or- chestral, chamber, recitals, vo- cal, featuring international and local artists and ensembles. Held in various locations around Go- zo (with some events in Malta), the festival incorporates multi- ple creative arts, from literature, to acting, cinema and live-paint- ing, whilst presenting multiple genres (jazz, pop, musicals and folk music). It will also host an exhibition by 30 Chinese female artists and shall commemorate the bi-centenary since the birth of Clara Schumann. Lectures MARCH 14 Fortress Malta: An Island Under Siege (1940-1942) Celebrated UK author and broadcaster James Holland will tell the island's incredible story of wartime defiance, to help Save Valletta's Skyline. In his lecture entitled Fortress Malta: An Is- land Under Siege (1940-1942), popular author, historian and BBC broadcaster James Holland will share the human drama ex- perienced as Malta became the most bombed place in the world and the islanders were literally starving. The lecture will be held on Thursday 14 March in the Ballroom at the Phoenicia Hotel in Valletta. The talk will be fol- lowed by a short meet-and-greet with guests, and an optional VIP dinner.
