'Keith is protecting you' MATTHEW VELLA & SAVIOUR BALZAN A clip from recordings made by Daphne Caruana Galizia mur- der middleman Melvin Theuma reveals that people implicated in the assassination could have been shielded by the former prime minister's chief of staff, Keith Schembri. Theuma, who turned state witness in the murder case, has been giving testimony in the last weeks to back up se- cret recordings he made of his conversations with the Tumas magnate, who stands accused of being the mastermind in the journalist's assassination. But a source privy to the re- cordings says Theuma can also be heard speaking to an asso- ciate of Yorgen Fenech, whose name MaltaToday knows but is withholding pending the com- pilation of evidence, reassuring Theuma of Keith Schembri's protection from the police in- vestigation. MaltaToday understands that at the time of the recording, Theuma was under pressure from an FIAU investigation that had prodded a police in- vestigation into money laun- dering. In fact it was this pending arrest in November 2019 that led him to admit his role in the Caruana Galizia assassination. Fearing arrest, Theuma reached out to Fenech's associ- ate, anxious about the investi- gation. "Do you know what I'm really worried about… it's not Daph- ne, but the money laundering," Theuma can be heard saying, as reported by MaltaToday's source.
