Nonetheless, despite the air of optimism, Hanania does not be- lieve Trump should have been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize by Deputy Prime Minister Ian Borg, at least for the time be- ing. "I don't think this was the right time to nominate him for the peace prize. Maybe next year after this plan is implemented, maybe if he helps establish a Pal- estinian state, we would actually help in the nomination," Hana- nia says. He adds the peace plan came about in the wake of internation- al momentum for recognition of the Palestinian state and world- wide demonstrations. Malta formally recognised Palestinian statehood last month at the UN General Assembly along other countries like France, the UK, Canada and Australia. As of last Friday, at noon, a fragile ceasefire came into effect in Gaza. Israeli troops withdrew to a pre-set line but remain in- side the enclave and Palestinians started returning to their devas- tated homes in the north. Mean- while, Hamas and Israel are pre- paring to exchange hostages for Palestinian prisoners respective- ly over the coming hours. On Hamas's future, the am- bassador says the organisation should step down and let Pales- tinians decide in fair elections who will lead them. Only the State of Palestine must be in possession of weapons, Hanania says. INTERVIEW IN MT2 Hanania: Hamas should step down Palestinian Ambassador Fadi Hanania (Photo: James Bianchi/MaltaToday) Neptunes proposes kiosk on extended Balluta promenade JAMES DEBONO jdebono@mediatoday.com.mt NEPTUNES Water Polo Club has applied to build a new kiosk and adjacent seating area on an ex- tended promenade over the club's pool facing the Balluta church. The club has also applied to sanction minor changes to its existing tented kiosk, which is largely covered by a permit issued in 2021. The area also includes another structure housing a tick- et booth and an ATM which was regularised in 2024. According to the club's appli- cation, the 200sq.m promenade extension will benefit the general public. But a number of residents are ob- jecting to the proposed develop- ment, claiming that the new kiosk and seating area will block views of the church and other scheduled buildings from the promenade. Residents lamented that views are already being blocked from the promenade by the existing ki- osk, which also encloses a signifi- cant amount of public space. Moreover, they claim that the existing 1.5m passage on the promenade near the existing ki- osk is not sufficient for the current footfall and have asked for studies to determine an adequate width. They also warned that the plac- ing of tables and chairs, which would obviously require umbrel- las, will further block the view of the church. While appreciating the increase in space being proposed for the public, they argue for better de- signs that would eliminate the obstruction of views and provide improved access. The PA is also currently consid- ering a land reclamation project in the vicinity to accommodate sports and commercial facilities for the San Giljan Water Polo Club. Neptunes Water Polo Club applies for new kiosk with seating area, while extending promenade on club's pool by an extra 200sq.m
