7 gozotoday | FRIDAY • 21 NOVEMBER 2025 NEWS Attard legacy and cannabis science: a double bill at Il-Hagar this November ON the evening of Friday 28th and the morning of Saturday 29th November, Il-Ħaġar Muse- um will host two public talks on completely different topics, both of which we are sure will prove interesting. On Friday 28th November at 19:30, Joseph Attard Tabone and Dr Michael Refalo will discuss Felice and Pietro Attard, two in- dividuals – father and son – who made a significant contribution to Gozitan society and culture during the 19th century. Where- as the former is best known for his compilation of the Giuliana Masini (later continued by his son), the latter's varied activities included his association with Soċjetà Filarmonika La Stella. Controversy has surrounded his role; myth and fiction have long competed with historical fact. This public talk examines Pietro Attard's role by distilling docu- mented historical evidence from later accretions. As such, it repre- sents an important step towards achieving a compromise in the perennial, long-standing com- petition and rivalry between the two band clubs in Gozo's main town. The talk will conclude with the official launch of the speak- ers' new book, Felice and Pietro Attard: Family, Profession, Inter- ests and Passions, which explores in greater depth the lives and leg- acies of the talk's protagonists. This event is being held in collab- oration with Kite Group. The following morning, on Sat- urday 29th at 11.00, renowned Gozitan psychiatrist Prof. Anton Grech will explain how canna- bis has been used by humans for many years to alter mental states, leading to divided opinions about its effects. Some view cannabis as a source of serious problems, in- cluding an increase in accidents in Malta, while others regard it as the holy grail – a remedy for nu- merous illnesses. Professor Grech asserts that scientific inquiry is essential for uncovering the truth about cannabis. In this lecture, he aims to explain, in layman's terms, the scientific insights into cannabis's actions and its posi- tive and negative consequenc- es. He will also draw on his own research in this field, conducted in both London and Malta. This second talk of the weekend is be- ing held in collaboration with the OASI Foundation. Admission to both public talks is free, but seat reservations are recommended by sending an email to events@heartofgozo. org.mt CONTINUES FROM PAGE 1 The festivities will kick off on Saturday, 29 November, with the concert "Christmas it's Time" at the Aurora Opera Theatre in Vic- toria, and will culminate on New Year's Eve with a major show fea- turing local singers and interna- tional guest Eiffel 65. The programme, coordinated by the Directorate for Cultural Heritage, includes popular events such as the Christmas Parade in Triq ir-Repubblika, Rabat; Beth- lehem in Għajnsielem; Children's World at Villa Rundle, which will also host a Christmas Market and Illuminated Gardens; The Rock n' Roll Panto Robin Hood and the Babes in the Wood at Teatru Astra; Christmas Magic in Għar Ilma, Santa Luċija; Santa's Work- shop at Ta' Dbieġi Crafts Village in Għarb; Carols by Candlelight, concerts, and various traditional Gozitan nativity displays. Activ- ities are designed to offer enter- tainment, culture, and festive at- mosphere throughout the season. Gozo Minister Clint Camilleri said, "Once again, the Ministry has prepared an extensive programme across the island in collaboration with various organisations and local councils. Christmas in Gozo has grown over the years to be- come a unique experience for families. I invite everyone to join us and enjoy this beautiful time of the year."
