Malta joins forces to tackle antimicrobial resistance: Xjenza Malta nationally launches the European Partnership on One Health Antimicrobial Resistance XJENZA Malta has officially joined the European Partner- ship on One Health Antimicro- bial Resistance (EUP OHAMR), an EU-supported initiative unit- ing 53 organisations across 30 countries to advance cross-sec- toral research and innovative solutions against antimicrobial resistance (AMR). The national launch event, held at Esplora Planetarium Hall, gathered leading researchers, policymakers, and stakeholders to mark Malta's commitment to collaborative action on AMR. Through this European part- nership, Xjenza Malta will support Maltese researchers and innovators to participate in transnational research pro- jects, providing up to €500,000 per project under the first Joint Transnational Call focused on "Treatments and adherence to treatment protocols". Projects may explore novel combination treatments to extend antimicro- bial efficacy, develop innovative tools to improve treatment ad- herence, or assess the contribu- tion of veterinary and agricultur- al antimicrobial use to AMR. Xjenza Malta CEO Mr Silvio Scerri emphasised the agency's commitment to strengthening Malta's research capacity within this major EU partnership, while Prof. Michael Borg, Chair of the National Antimicrobial Resist- ance Committee, delivered a keynote speech outlining local and global AMR trends. Antimicrobial resistance re- mains a serious global health threat, causing tens of thousands of deaths annually across Eu- rope, with projections indicating a dramatic rise unless urgent ac- tion is taken. By joining the EUP OHAMR, Malta reinforces its commitment to innovative, sci- ence-driven public health policy and international research col- laboration. Xjenza Malta will continue to play a central role in fostering Maltese expertise and driving evidence-based solutions to safeguard public health for fu- ture generations. Silvio Scerri added, "Xjenza Malta is proud to facilitate Mal- tese participation in interna- tional research collaborations. Together, we can develop in- novative strategies that protect public health and safeguard the effectiveness of antimicrobial treatments for future genera- tions."
