6 gozotoday | FRIDAY • 16 JANUARY 2026 NEWS Valentines in Gozo 2026 programme announced following Christmas success A new programme of Val- entine's-themed events will take place across Gozo between 31 January and 14 February 2026, as the government seeks to build on the strong turnout recorded during the Christmas period. The programme, titled 'In- ħobbok Valentine's in Gozo 2026', was announced by the Minister for Gozo, Clint Camilleri, and will feature a range of cultural, musical and community activities spread across several Gozitan locali- ties. Minister Camilleri said the in- itiative follows the "record suc- cess" of the 'Milied f'Għawdex' programme and forms part of ongoing efforts to boost tour- ism during traditionally quieter months. He said the aim is to position Gozo as an all-year- round destination, in line with the government's 'Gozo – Is- land of Villages' strategy. Valentine's celebrations in Gozo will begin with the pop- ular Għawdex #Inħobbok concert, which this year will feature a performance by The Travellers. The programme will continue with a series of cultural events linked to the Valentine's period, celebrating love in its various forms. The minister said this year's activities are designed to ap- peal to couples, families and groups of friends, encouraging visitors and residents to en- joy village squares and streets across the island. Events will include concerts, artisan mar- kets, gastronomic experiences and village-based activities. Camilleri also referred to recent efforts to strengthen Gozo's cultural calendar and provide greater opportuni- ties for local artists. He noted that Victoria (Rabat) has been shortlisted as a finalist to be- come European Capital of Culture 2031, describing the achievement as recognition of the island's creative talent and community commitment. The minister invited the pub- lic to visit Gozo during the Val- entine's period to experience the island's culture, creativity and seasonal events. Minister for Gozo Clint Camilleri made the announcement in Gozo earlier this week MALTA'S Commissioner for Animal Welfare, Fleur Abela, has defended the Gozo SPCA's decision to refuse a kitten adop- tion to a 69-year-old applicant, saying the move prioritises the long-term welfare of the animal. The issue arose after a Times of Malta article described the shelter's decision as "ageist." Dr Abela stressed that while ani- mals are cherished companions, their specific care needs must be met throughout their lives, and shelters have a duty to ensure that potential adopters can pro- vide long-term security. "For many years, NGO-run shelters have supported an al- ready overstretched system," Abela said. "Adoption and fos- tering criteria should never be so rigid as to prevent animals from finding a home, but shel- ters must make proportion- ate and objective assessments, which may include considering the adopter's age, the animal's age, the long-term commitment required, and the presence of a next of kin." Abela highlighted that kittens and puppies represent a com- mitment of at least ten years. "Shelters must take all necessary measures to ensure that adopt- ed animals are not abandoned or left without proper care later in life," she said. "The ultimate goal of any adoption process must be to place animals in safe and loving homes for their en- tire lives." The Commissioner concluded that animal welfare must remain central to all adoption decisions, with policies guided by fairness, responsibility, and compassion.
