7 gozotoday | FRIDAY • 6 FEBRUARY 2026 CULTURE RAYNOR Winn's acclaimed memoir The Salt Path has been selected as Book of the Month for February, highlighting one of the most celebrated non-fiction works of the past decade. First published by Penguin Books in March 2018, the 273-page memoir has sold over two million copies worldwide and has been widely recognized for its moving portrayal of resil- ience and the restorative pow- er of nature. The book earned a place on The Sunday Times 2024 list of the Top 100 Books of the Past Fifty Years, won the Royal Society of Literature Christopher Bland Prize, and was shortlisted for both the Wainwright Prize for Nature Writing and the Costa Biography Award. The Salt Path recounts the ex- traordinary journey of Raynor Winn and her husband, Moth. Just days after learning of Moth's terminal illness, the couple lost their home and livelihood. With nothing left, they embarked on a 630-mile trek along the South West Coast Path, from Somer- set to Dorset, carrying only the essentials. Their journey through rugged cliffs, sweeping coastlines, and ever-changing skies became a testament to human endurance, grief, and the healing power of the natural world. Critics have praised the memoir for its honesty and inspiration. The Guardian called it "a beau- tiful, thoughtful, lyrical story of homelessness, human strength and endurance," while The Sun- day Times described it as "a tale of triumph: of hope over despair; of love over everything." The Times hailed it as "the most in- spirational book of this year," and Stylist recommended it as "a beautiful story and a reminder that humans can endure adversi- ty." Author Raynor Winn is a reg- ular long-distance walker and writer who explores themes of nature, homelessness, and hu- man connection to the land. She lives in Cornwall with her hus- band. Her other work, The Wild Silence, was shortlisted for the 2021 Wainwright Prize for Na- ture Writing. In celebration of the book, members of the Gozo book club will gather to discuss The Salt Path over coffee on Wednesday, 25 February, from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Ta' Dbiegi Cafe at the Craft Centre in Gharb, Gozo. Attendees are asked to confirm their attendance via the cafe's Facebook page to ensure ade- quate seating. The discussion promises to be an engaging opportunity for readers to reflect on the themes of courage, resilience, and the deep connection between hu- mans and the natural world that have made The Salt Path a liter- ary phenomenon.
