Many youths today experience emotions such as fear, anxiety, grief, anger, frustration, and even hopelessness when they think about the future of our planet. Spotted crake MANY birds go to great lengths to show off their presence, some- times to the point of impracticality – think peacock! Males parade their flamboyance to attract females and to warn other males off their patch and their woman. But there are also birds that go the other extreme, employing tricks and ploys to render themselves vir- tually invisible. One group that usually opts for the latter "lifestyle" are the largely secretive rails and crakes. About a dozen species of these have occurred in Malta, some very rarely. One scarce species is the diminutive spotted crake (M. gallozz tat-tikek), an inhabit- ant of marshes with thickly vegetated margins. There it skulks and forages for worms and insects, never far from sheltering foliage. Its small size and speckly plumage help hide it from predatory eyes – and hunter's guns, one hopes. 5 maltatoday | SUNDAY • 15 MARCH 2026 ALMANAC Victor Falzon, Aaron Tanti (photo) https://foemalta.org/blog/youth-workshop-climate-emotions/
