Directed by Toni Attard and adapted for the stage by Marta Vella, the production breathes new life into the popular novel through a theatre production filled with humour, nostalgia and unexpected revelations. Based on a manuscript discov- ered by Ġenoveffa's grandson, the story reveals that his grand- mother was far from the meek woman many imagined. Her writings portray a mischievous and passionate spirit, full of en- ergy and a zest for life, whom neither family expectations nor advice could restrain - except, perhaps, Zanzu, the love of her life. Director and co-producer To- ni Attard expressed his enthusi- asm for the production, forming part of Udjenza's 5th anniversa- ry programme. "The story has captured the imagination of generations of Maltese readers and Nanna Ġenoveffa is exactly the kind of character that be- longs on stage and shared with a Maltese audience." Thirteen years ago, Marta Vella was part of the cast per- forming a different adaptation. This time she returns not only in the title role but also as the playwright behind the theatrical adaptation. "I'm incredibly excited to step back into Nanna Ġenoveffa's shoes," said Vella. "This time it will be even more special be- cause I will be sharing the stage with my own mother." Joining the cast are Josette Ciappara, Sander Agius, Sean Borg and Christine Francalan- za, who will bring to the stage this iconic story by Trevor Żah- ra, recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Premju għall-Arti 2025. Il-Ħajja Sigrieta tan-Nanna Ġenoveffa will be staged at Te- atru Salesjan from 24 April to 3 May 2026. Tickets are available from www.udjenza.com.
