11 gozotoday | FRIDAY • 20 MARCH 2026 CULTURE San Lawrenz set to host immersive cultural event Sqaqien this April SAN Lawrenz will transform into a vibrant cultural stage on Saturday, 11 April, as the village hosts this year's edition of "Sqa- qien", part of Gozo's spring cul- tural calendar. Organised by the San Lawrenz Local Council, with support from the Direttorat tal-Gvern Lokali and the Direttorat tal-Kultura within the Ministry for Gozo and Planning, the event runs from 8pm to 11pm and is open to the public free of charge.. Originally launched to cele- brate the charm of the village, Sqaqien has evolved into a sig- nature cultural attraction on the islands, inviting visitors to wan- der through the narrow streets of San Lawrenz and discover its unique geological and environ- mental features. This year's programme will include a wide range of artistic and cultural activities, including: • Live music performances spanning rock to classical • Contemporary and tradi- tional art exhibitions • Drama and other artistic performances • Food tasting experiences highlighting local flavours • Cultural moments staged in distinctive village loca- tions The event features a curated walking route through 14 lanes in the village, each offering visi- tors the chance to experience art and culture in a more intimate, immersive setting. Organisers said each stop along the route showcases local creativity while encouraging participants to en- gage with the village environ- ment. "Sqaqien is an immersive expe- rience of what our islands can of- fer, all within one village," organ- isers said. "It provides residents and visitors alike with a unique opportunity to explore San Law- renz while enjoying some of the finest performing arts our islands have to offer." The event forms part of the wider Springtime in Gozo 2026 programme, which includes ex- hibitions, concerts, and commu- nity activities across the island during April. GOZO is set to host a series of activities as part of the European Artistic Crafts Days, with events scheduled across multiple lo- cations in early April as part of the island's spring cultural pro- gramme. According to listings pub- lished under the Springtime in Gozo 2026 calendar, activi- ties linked to the initiative will take place between April 7 and April 12, including sessions on April 7 and April 8 running from 8am to 5pm. The events will be held at var- ious sites across Gozo rather than a single venue, with or- ganisers indicating that par- ticipating artisans will open their workshops to the public, host demonstrations and offer hands-on sessions. The 2026 edition will be held under the theme "With Heart and Soul", focusing on the transmission of craft skills and knowledge, and highlighting the link between creativity, dis- cipline and tradition. The initiative is being coor- dinated locally by the Malta Crafts Foundation, with activ- ities in Gozo forming part of a wider European programme aimed at promoting traditional and contemporary crafts. Events in Gozo are being in- corporated into the broader spring calendar of cultural ac- tivities, which includes exhi- bitions, concerts and heritage events taking place across the island during the same period.
