7 gozotoday | FRIDAY • 1 MAY 2026 OPINION A beacon of hope: Dar Il- Kantuniera in Gozo supports mental health recovery IN small, close-knit commu- nities like Gozo, mental health carries a unique paradox. On one hand, strong social ties can offer a powerful safety net. On the other, stigma and geograph- ic isolation often prevent indi- viduals from seeking the help they need. Too many suffer in silence, caught between famil- iarity and fear of judgment. It is precisely within this delicate balance that Dar il-Kantuni- era has emerged as a beacon of hope. Inspired by international best practices yet firmly rooted in Gozo's social and cultural re- alities, Dar il-Kantuniera fills a critical gap in the mental health system. It is not a hospital, nor simply a support centre; it is a transitional space that bridg- es the often-overlooked divide between clinical treatment and real-life reintegration. Recovery does not end at dis- charge. For many individuals, the hardest part begins after leaving structured care: return- ing to daily routines, rebuilding relationships, and rediscovering purpose. Dar il-Kantuniera rec- ognises this reality and responds with a model that is both practi- cal and deeply humane. At its core, the initiative— co-designed with experts and implemented by The Malta Trust Foundation in collabora- tion with the Ministry for Gozo and Planning—champions a community-driven approach. It places dignity, empowerment, and inclusion at the centre of recovery. This is not just about manag- ing symptoms. It is about re- building lives. The programme operates on three key pillars. The first is therapeutic sup- port, where residents receive personalised counselling and guidance tailored to their indi- vidual needs. This ensures they are emotionally equipped for the transition back into society. The second pillar, communi- ty engagement, tackles one of the most persistent barriers to mental health recovery: stigma. Through workshops, awareness campaigns, and open dialogue, Dar il-Kantuniera is not only supporting residents; it is ed- ucating the wider community and fostering a culture of un- derstanding. The third pillar, peer support, may well be its most transform- ative. By creating safe spaces where individuals can share their experiences, the pro- gramme nurtures connection, empathy, and mutual strength. Recovery, in this sense, be- comes a shared journey rather than a solitary struggle. The results speak volumes. An 86% reintegration rate in- to community life is not just a statistic—it is a powerful testa- ment to what can be achieved when care extends beyond clin- ical walls and into the fabric of society. Importantly, the initiative con- tinues to evolve. In response to growing and increasingly com- plex mental health needs, Dar il-Kantuniera has expanded its services to support individuals with dual diagnoses, including those facing both mental health challenges and substance abuse. Through collaboration with the OASI Foundation and other partners, it now offers more ho- listic, wraparound care. But perhaps its greatest achievement lies beyond meas- urable outcomes. Dar il-Kantu- niera is changing the narrative around mental health in Gozo. It is shifting the conversation from stigma to solidarity, from isolation to inclusion. It demon- strates that when government and civil society work hand in hand, meaningful and lasting change is not only possible, but sustainable. As Gozo continues to strength- en its mental health services, Dar il-Kantuniera stands as a model of what can be achieved through compassion, collabo- ration, and vision. It reminds us that recovery is not merely clinical. Instead, recovery has a profoundly human aspect, and that's were hope lies. Joyce Farrugia, Director General Operations Division A new fast ferry route linking Sliema, Buġibba and Gozo will begin operating next week, marking a major expansion of Malta's sea transport network aimed at reducing road conges- tion and improving inter-island connectivity. Transport Minister Chris Bonett announced that the ser- vice will launch on May 5. The new route forms part of the government's wider "Malta in Motion" strategy, which aims to shift more journeys from roads to sea transport. The service will connect Sliema and Buġibba directly with Mġarr Harbour in Gozo, adding a new alternative to ex- isting ferry links from Ċirkew- wa and Valletta. Each crossing is expected to take around 30 minutes, offer- ing a faster option for commut- ers and tourists travelling be- tween Malta and Gozo. Travel between Sliema and Buġibba will be free for Tal-Linja card holders, while trips to Gozo will require a fare, with one-way tickets priced at about €8.50 for non-residents. Officials say the route is in- tended to reduce traffic on Mal- ta's roads, particularly during peak hours and the summer tourist season. It is also expect- ed to support tourism and eco- nomic activity by making Gozo more accessible. The launch follows delays caused by tendering disputes and legal challenges that pushed back earlier plans for the ser- vice. Prime Minister Robert Abela said the ferry will strengthen connectivity between the is- lands and provide commuters with more transport options. The new service will operate alongside existing ferry routes and is expected to increase flex- ibility for daily travel between Malta and Gozo.
