Restaurants, hotels, bakeries, shops, NGOs, and food banks can donate surplus edible food, helping reduce waste and sup- port vulnerable communities. By preventing food from ending up in landfill, the initiative also cuts methane emissions. Businesses and organisations are invited to register as donors or recipients and join the movement to reduce food waste while creating a positive social and environmental impact. Green idea of the week 1032 Don't miss this Give nature a voice. Become a BirdLife member 1032. Little ringed plover EVERY spring birds fly in from Africa on their way home to nest. One much-awaited bird at Għadira nature reserve is the little ringed plover (M. monakella), a small shorebird hardly bigger than a spar- row. In 1995 this bird certified BirdLife's wetland restoration at Għadira a success story, when a pair nested on one of the artificial islands, thereby adding a new species to our frugal list of breeding birds. Since then two to four pairs have returned every year and raised families in this small protected haven. Little ringed plover nests are simple affairs, with eggs laid straight on a patch of shingle, usually on one of the tiny islands in the lake. But despite the frugal- ity the plan works, as brood after brood yearly hatch, grow, learn to fly and then wing back to Africa after their parents. Nature is always ready to reward us, we only need to give it a fighting chance. 5 maltatoday | SUNDAY • 2 AUGUST 2026 ALMANAC Victor Falzon, Aron Tanti (Photo) Download the App Now: www.thefoodconnect.eu/ Friends of the Earth Malta launches The Food
