7 gozotoday | FRIDAY • 4 SEPTEMBER 2026 NEWS A magnitude 2.4 earthquake was recorded off the eastern coast of Gozo in the early hours of Wednesday morning, according to the University of Malta's Seismic Monitoring and Research Group (SMRG). The earthquake occurred at around 3:53am local time, with the event recorded at 01:53:37 UTC. The SMRG said, the Qala seismic station was the first to detect the tremor, followed by the station in Comino. The signal was subsequently picked up across the Malta Seismic Network and by seis- mic stations south of Sicily. Furthermore, the research group said a magnitude 2.4 earthquake is considered small, "although events of this size can still be felt locally, particularly when they occur relatively close to the surface and populated areas." The Malta Seismic Network is continuing to monitor seis- mic activity around the Mal- tese Islands and the wider central Mediterranean region.
