A new exhibition at MUŻA – The National Community Art Museum in Valletta marks 150 years since the birth of Edward Caruana Dingli, one of Malta's most influential artists. Part of MUŻA's programme of exhibi- tions and events exploring Mal- ta's artistic heritage, the display brings together a selection of Caruana Dingli's works from the National Collection, highlight- ing the dialogue between his formal portraits and folkloristic paintings. Born into an artistic family in Valletta on 10th August 1876, Caruana Dingli pursued a career in military service before ded- icating himself to art. He went on to become Malta's leading portrait painter of the first half of the twentieth century. A re- spected teacher at the Govern- ment School of Art, Caruana Dingli also influenced a genera- tion of Maltese artists, including Willie Apap, Anton Inglott, Em- vin Cremona and Esprit Barthet. His portraits of politicians, clergy, professionals and prom- inent families reveal his excep- tional ability to observe and convey personality, capturing the character of his sitters. Alongside them, his folkloristic paintings offer a vivid record of a Malta that was already changing: village streets, religious feasts, markets, countryside scenes and working people. Works includ- ing the iconic 'Chicken Hawker', admired for its rich colours and the quiet dignity of its subject, and 'The Boschetto Fair', de- picting the lively Mnarja cele- brations, preserve customs and ways of life that have since dis- appeared. His self-portraits of- fer further glimpses of the artist behind these acclaimed works. Titled Edward Caruana Dingli (1876–1950): Celebrating 150 Years since his Birth, the exhi- bition showcases the breadth of his artistic practice and his lasting contribution to Maltese art.The exhibition also explores Caruana Dingli's distinctive technique. His portraits are imbued with vitality and warmth, combining refined academic precision with careful drawing and smooth modelling. In his folkloristic scenes, he adopts a freer, more painterly approach, using visible brushstrokes, texture and col- our to convey movement, light and atmosphere with greater spontaneity. Mario Cutajar, MUŻA's Direc- tor and Heritage Malta's Chair- man, commented: "Edward Caruana Dingli had a significant impact on Maltese art. He was the favourite pupil of Giuseppe Calì and was the first to lead the School of Art after it was es- tablished. He taught successive artists who also left their mark on local art. We know him as a portraitist, and we all recognise the local character he managed to capture in his popular works depicting Malta as it once was. This exhibition celebrates the artist's life and the works he left us. It is another exhibition with- in MUŻA's broad programme celebrating the Maltese artist." More of Caruana Dingli's works can be found throughout MUŻA's permanent display, including the lesser-known 'Il- Ġlieda fil-Mandraġġ', a recent acquisition by Heritage Malta. A complementary publication providing deeper insight into Caruana Dingli's life and work will be available in the coming weeks as part of Heritage Malta's Maltese Artists Series. The exhibition is open daily from 10am to 6pm and runs un- til Sunday, 4 October. Admission is included with the museum ticket. 8 maltatoday | WEDNESDAY • 9 SEPTEMBER 2026 CULTURE MUZA celebrates 150 years of Edward Caruana Dingli A new exhibition at MUŻA in Valletta, marks 150 years since the birth of Edward Caruana Dingli, one of Malta's most inf luential artists NOTICE OF EMPLOYMENT AGENCY LICENCE RENEWAL R.A.C.S.
