Contrary to popular misconceptions, and perhaps a strong confirmation of our earlier survey on the à la carte Catholicism of the Maltese islands, the Maltese people feel united by their language, rather than the Roman Catholic religion (even though this still rates a high fourth in cultural identifiers). Over two-thirds of respondents say the Maltese language could be the greatest sig- nifier of nationality, and only 2.3% referred to Malta's bilingualism as a mark of their identity. In today's survey, 68.2% say that their language is the defining feature of their Maltese identity. Joseph Calleja is seen as Malta's best export to the world together with Kinnie and tomato products and surprisingly, 63% recognise that Maltese were once Muslims. They have been directed to potential evidence that could prove that Roderick Grech – accused by the police after the alleged botched arraignment of Darryl Luke Borg for a B'Kara hold up – may not be guilty of the crime after all. This strange twist of events may continue to complicate a case that has become a political focal point for PN Opposition leader Simon Busuttil, who has called for the resignations of the Home Affairs Minister and the Commissioner of Police. All this comes after new pictorial evidence shows that Roderick Grech and Darryl Luke Borg shared the same social milieu of Inspector Elton Taliana. Pictures in MaltaToday's possession show Inspector Elton Taliana fraternising in bars with friends and acquaintances of Darryl Luke Borg and Roderick Grech. In the pictorial evidence, Elton Taliana is also seen singing karaoke with a guitar in hand. Taliana, who used to serve as a security officer to former home affairs minister Tonio Borg, was singled out by the police board headed by retired Judge Depasquale for his participation in the investigations in the B'Kara hold up. Despite facing various internal investigations for various criminal allegations, he was promoted to Inspector.
