However no arrests had been made at the time of going to print. The Rapid Intervention Unit and the Criminal Investigation Department discovered the tunnel after weeks of intensive investigations, the short and non-triumphant police said. The initial investigations were carried out after the police were tipped off about preparations for a bank robbery in Swieqi, situated a block away from the residence of Education Minister Evarist Bartolo. Following the investigations, the police discovered the 15-metre tunnel which is over a metre wide and a 1.5 metres high. The tunnel was dug in a garage situated in a complex in Triq il-Qatta, Swieqi. The tunnel was dug beneath Triq it-Tiben, and was only a few metres short of the bank vaults. The police added that the plotters' intent was to break through the vaults and carry the money through the tunnel. Magistrate Audrey Demicoli ordered an inquiry while the police are still trying to identify the persons behind the plot.
