As an acknowledgement to the contribution of entities towards the health and safety at their place of work, the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work (EU- OSHA) in collaboration with the Malta Occupational Health and Safety Authority (OHSA - Malta) will this year be organizing the 12th European Good Practice Awards in Occupational Safety and Health. The aim of this award is to make all employers and workers aware of the benefit derived from good safe- ty and health practices to control risk at work. The theme chosen by the European Agency for the 2014- 15 awards is 'Healthy workplaces manage stress'. The reason behind this theme is to recognise companies or organi- sations that have made outstand- ing and innovative contributions towards the effective promotion of the management of work-related stress and psychosocial risks, and thereby preventing their signifi- cant negative effects for workers, employers and governments. Ef- fectively tackling psychosocial risks creates a work environment in which workers stay healthy, a more positive workplace culture, and, consequently, improvement in business per- formance. A panel of independent judges will evaluate all submissions and the winner will be an- nounced later on during a cere- mony held by OHSA – Malta in November 2014. Their practice and example will be submitted to the EU-OSHA. Submission forms and bro- chures may be downloaded from the OHSA website http:// www.ohsa.org.mt. Further in- formation can be obtained by phoning the OHS Authority on Telephone No 21 247677/8. Submissions should reach the OHS Authority, 17 Edgar Ferro Street, Pieta PTA 1533 by not later Monday, 6 October 2014 After another successful year of operation, GreenPak Cooperative Society has for the 9th successive year running made a net surplus on its recycling operations. GreenPak's scheme has also registered its highest recycling performance since its set up in 2005. This has only been possible through a continuous commitment towards good governance and a pledge, originally made in 2005, that GreenPak will operate at the least possible cost in the interest of the environment. Today, GreenPak operates across Malta and Gozo providing recy- cling services to over 65% of the population. Over 1,300 companies form part of this packaging waste recycling cooperative and its serv- ices, while in the last 12 months eight more local councils have joined the GreenPak Scheme due to the superior service it provides. Figures show that during the last year, companies registered a 4.5% increase in waste recovery while Local Councils recorded a similar addition from last year. GreenPak is run as a cooperative society and its scheme is managed on a not-for-profit basis, provid- ing total transparency in the way it does business. As with any other cooperative, the surplus funds are given back to the society members. In fact, up to a quarter of the fees they paid in 2013 will be handed back to these member companies. At present, the 2013 accounts are being audited by PwC and will be presented in the forthcoming AGM planned for 15 May 2014. GreenPak CEO Ing Mario Schembri explained, "For the last nine years, we have worked tireless- ly to change perceptions of waste recycling. Rather than re-inventing the wheel, GreenPak adopted the internationally renowned Green Dot scheme, which incentivises companies and local councils to start thinking in a way that aligns environmental friendliness with the practicalities of business acu- men. "Today, we have shown that being part of GreenPak is about making the right choices. It is about inno- vative, green business. It is about industry supporting the communi- ty to recycle more. It is about being both environmentally sustainable and economically viable. "What before was considered to be a problem, today we have shown and proven that the recycling of waste packaging is an opportunity to create business opportunities and stimulate public participa- tion," said Ing Schembri. While maintaining their philosophical and political identi- ties Maltese MEP's collaborate with one another in the national interest within the setting of the European Parliament. This was the core message from MEP's Marlene Mizzi and Roberta Metsola, who gave various examples of the different scenarios they work in as representatives coming from different political groups. Present at the event were PL candidates Marlene Mizzi and Cyrus Engerer, AD candidate Arnold Cassola and represent- ative Ralph Cassar and PN candidates Roberta Metsola, Jonathan Shaw, Kevin Cutajar, Therese Comodini Cachia and Francis Zammit Dimech. They were speaking during a discussion at the University Common room, which proved to be a good setting for students to assess the outlook of a number of MEPs and MEP candidates on several themes at an event as part of the series being organised by the League of Young Voters Malta (LYV), a joint initiative be- tween Aġenzija Żgħażagħ and the Na- tional Youth Council, with the support of the European Parliament Information Office. Organisations that participated in the debate were GWU Youths, JEF, SDM, Pulse, KSU, GUG, KNZ, Insite and WeAre. Andrew Azzopardi moderated the discussion. This event was organised by LVY to help bring more perspective onto the University Campus to encourage con- structive discussion about the main is- sues impacting the European election campaign. LVY is raising awareness on Campus about how issues are eventually polarized by the dominance of the two major political parties, making it easy for the neutral or floating voter to become disenchanted with the election and per- haps dismiss its importance. The League of Young Voters initiative is a pan-European one. Its aim is to reach out to young people who want to send out a message without being affiliated with a particular political party. What are the priorities of the MEP can- didates? How does an MEP strike a bal- ance between the national interest and the position of his/her political group? How do they define national interest in the first place? These were some of the questions asked by the students, who touched also upon several other issues including immigration, youth employ- ment, and minority rights. Introducing the event, Miriam Theu- ma, CEO of Aġenzija Żgħażagħ, spoke about the educational role the agency has. "In the context of the European elec- tions, our aim is to give youths opportu- nities to inform themselves and partici- pate in the debate", she said. Her message was reiterated by Dr Peter Agius, Head of the European Parliament Information Office, which is leading the information campaign around the election. LYV Malta hopes this will be a cam- paign with a difference: by youths, for youths, putting into the spotlight issues that directly interest and affect young people. Judging from the tenor of the debate and from the broad participation of MEP's and prospective MEP's, LYV is already delivering on its aims.
