maltatoday, SUNDAY, 11 MAY 2014 11 he said. He was flanked by MEP candi- dates Kevin Plumpton and Ray Bugeja, and MP Claudette Butti- gieg. "It is a travesty to have the PM hail a person who was charged with serious crimi- nal offences and found guilty," Fenech Adami said, insisting that Engerer be removed from chairman of the government's LGBT consultative council. "It is an embarrassment to have a criminal serving as a consultant to the home affairs minister Manuel Mallia." Engerer, who is also a consult- ant to civil liberties minister Helena Dalli, was charged with circulating pornographic imag- es of his former partner Marvic Camilleri, and of computer mis- use, in 2011 – the week he left the PN to move to Labour – and two years after his partner filed the police report in 2009. Despite Camilleri dropping the charges, the court case had to be finalised, resulting in his acquittal in 2013. But the At- torney General appealed the acquittal. Claudette Buttigieg insisted that Engerer's crime was "not a crime of passion but a pre- meditated and malicious plan", claiming that the gay commu- nity felt "hurt and betrayed" by the "vindictive, homophobic act". The MP said Engerer took compromising photos from his partner's Floriana apartment when they terminated their re- lationship, and sent them to his employer through three differ- ent computers from an email account "specifically set up for the purpose". "This was a homophobic act because Engerer knew how much gay persons suffer because of discrimination," she said. Fenech Adami defended his party's support of Engerer at the time he became deputy mayor for Sliema, when he was already being investigated by the police. "An allegation was one thing and a conviction is another," Fenech Adami said. "These actions are the work of a criminal mind, and so he should be expelled from the party and fired as government consult- ant to the home affairs ministry and the civil liberties ministry." Labour officials hearing in were on hand to offer the Nationalist MP refreshments: orchestrated though it was, party chief executive Gino Cauchi set up a table just outside the Labour headquarters, beckon- ing Fenech Adami to help himself to a few nibbles. It was awkward moment which the Labour officials were keen in relishing in. News The Bonds are unsecured and unsubordinated.
