Events 40 maltatoday, SUNDAY, 18 MAY 2014 Dar Darun sells 300 tickets in one day A staggering 300 tickets for this much awaited theatre production were sold in the first 24 hours alone and this promises an even more ex- citing journey for Dar Darun. Directed by Clive Piscopo, penned by Andre Mangion & Clive Piscopo, and with choreography by Warren Bonello, Dar Darun features an in- credible cast of upcoming talent. This theatrical journey started months ago when producer Clive Piscopo devised a project aimed at finding relatively unknown talent and orchestrate it into a memorable theatre experience. An overwhelm- ing number of 130 applicants showed interest but only 20 individuals could be chosen to form cast and crew. Dar Darun tells the story of Jason, Tiziano, Austin and Zack who de- cide to celebrate their friend Bobby's bachelor's party in an old and aban- doned house on the outskirts of a quiet village. They thought they were in for a great boy's night out like the old times. But away from their slightly possessive yet lovable partners, lit- tle do the five men suspect that they are in for the most unexpected night ever. Dar Darun is their unforeseen, col- ourful and incredibly entertaining journey. Dar Darun is penned by Clive Pis- copo, who wrote the recent hit series 'Anġli: Kapitlu Ġdid' on TVM, and Andre Mangion, who received the award for Promising Young Writer 2013 in last year's Konkors Letterat- ura Żgħażagħ for his novel 'Tattoo'. Choreographer Warren Bonello is most well-known for his choreog- raphy of Kurt Calleja's 'This is the Night'. "I was incredibly surprised at the reaction Dar Darun caused," says Piscopo, who has also directed the winning productions in the Social Theatre Festival for two consecutive years. "It gave a very positive sign that theatre in Malta is very much alive, and there is a huge thirst by upcoming talent to find a space, col- laborate and create." In order to ensure a production of the highest quality, Piscopo also in- vited some of the best professionals in the field – mainly Mario Philip Azzopardi, Malcolm Galea, War- ren Bonello and David Micallef – to collaborate with the actors and crew and provide workshops in their training period. These were two months of intense training, experimentation and ar- tistic collaboration. The very enthu- siastic team gelled immediately and the result seems like it's going to be one memorable night of theatre and spectacle. "Which is why we were also com- pletely stunned and humbled by the incredible positive reaction we received when booking opened," admitted Piscopo. "300 tickets were sold in the first 24 hours. "This has made us all very excited and we are looking forward more than ever to share Dar Darun with our audiences. Honestly, it's a great privilege to get to do something you really love and receive so much sup- port." Dar Darun is supported by the Malta Arts Fund and will be staged Friday 30th May, Saturday 31 May and Sunday 12 June at 8pm, at the City Theatre in Valletta. Tickets are €10 and can be purchased from www.ticketline.com.mt or from Embassy Cinemas box office in Val- letta. The first edition of the Valletta Green Festival, which featured a 400m² infiorata, attracted an esti- mated 40,000 strong crowd to St George's Square over the weekend of the 9 to 11 May. The floral carpet was the centrepiece of the Festival organised by the Valletta 2018 Foundation in collab- oration with a number of Government Environmen- tal organisations. The infiorata took an innovative and sustainable ap- proach to an ancient tradition that can be traced to its religious origins in 12th century Italy. While it is customary to use just the petals for such floral installa- tions, in this case 80,000 potted petunias and pansies were placed in close proximity to each other to create the same effect. The flowers were grown by staff at the Envi- ronmental Landscaping Consor- tium (ELC) nurseries and were all replanted in gardens around Malta and Gozo, emphasising the sustain- ability of the endeavour. The three-day festival also aimed to educate the public about the use of alterna- tive sources of energy and urban sustainable living. Members of the public could also exchange used batteries, spent light bulbs or expired medi- cines for potted plants, to encourage the proper disposal of the former. The Valletta Green Fes- tival introduced a new attraction to the city and gave visitors a new experience of St George's Square. It is envisaged that the festival will develop further in the coming years bringing on board more individuals and organisations alike, in the run-up to Valletta's Eu- ropean Capital of Culture in 2018. It is estimated the 400m² infiorata was the largest ever set up in Malta. Vodafone makes the world better with the New HTC One (M8)
