Further success at Laguna Walk PHOTOGRAPHY BY Joe Camenzuli Since Laguna Walk 's inaugura- tion at SmartCity Malta earlier this year, the new events hub has hosted a number of success- ful events. Last weekend was no different as thousands of people f locked to the premises to attend the '50 Years of Maltese Music' concert, organised by Fondazzjo- ni Ċelebrazzjonijiet Nazzjonali, in celebration of Malta's 50 years of Independence, on 21 September. The night saw the largest number of visitors at Laguna Walk yet, as visitors were offered an enter- taining night with the biggest hits of the last five decades. The event included performances from some of Malta's finest local talent, such as Ira Losco, Ivan Grech, Franklin Calleja, Olivia Lewis, Nadia Vella and Roger Tirazona. Hits like "L-ew wel tfajla li ħabbejt", "Viva Malta", "Int Djamant", "Xemx", "What I'd give" and "Marigold " along with a contemporary rep- ertoire, were performed on the night, accompanied by a band under the direction of Mr Paul Abela. On 27 and 28 September, Laguna Walk at SmartCity Malta, together with Catermax, will be hosting another much-anticipat- ed event: Oktoberfest. Everyone is invited to attend the festival which promises to be an exciting celebration. The entrance to the festival is free and ample parking spaces are available. The event will com- mence at 19:00 till late on Satur- day and will continue on Sunday from 11:00 onwards. GasanMamo assists in the organisation of the IUSTI Europe Congress THE 2014 IUSTI Europe Congress entitled "Migration, recreation and sexual health" will be held in Malta at the Radisson Blu Hotel between 18 and 20 September and is being sup- ported by GasanMamo Insurance. The host will be the Maltese Asso- ciation of Dermatology and Vener- eology (MADV) strongly supported by the British Association of Sexual Health and HIV (BASHH) which is co-organiser of the meeting. The Scientific Committee, led by Dr Jackie Sherrard have produced an innovative programme that will be of major interest to STI special- ists as well as to colleagues in other specialties including Infectious Dis- eases, Urology, Gynecology, Family Medicine, and Public Health, whose work may involve STI patients. In addition to the regular impor- tant academic topics discussed at IUSTI Europe meetings, this Con- gress will also address major topi- cal medico-social aspects of sexual health with special emphasis on immigrants particularly those from Africa. The scientific program is of very high quality, reflecting the broad range of STI and HIV science and clinical practice with a range of ple- naries, symposia, workshops and debates. The major tracks include sex health, travellers and migrants, high risk behaviour, HIV as related to STI practice, viral STIs and advances in diagnostics for sexual health. Further information on the IUSTI Europe Congress and how to register can be obtained by visiting www.ius- timalta2014.org. Planes and mazes will be coming to St George's Square St George's Square will host parts of an aircraft and an artistic maze at this year's Science in the Cit y. Lufthansa Technik Malta will be displaying a model aircraft and real-sized sections while Logix Creative and DAAA Haus will be setting up a large labyrinth where people can explore various sci- entific concepts with an artistic twist, thus a reimagined Square. Aircraft enthusiasts will have a great experience. Lufthansa Technik Maltawill have a thruster, shark skin paint sample (a new innovation by Lufthansa, Airbus Operations GmbH, Bremer Werk für Montag- esysteme GmbH and Fraunhofer- Institut IPT soon to be painted on tomorrow's planes), live non-de- structive testing, a video showing how aircraft f ly inside a tail cone, and how air samples are taken. Visitors have a chance to win a once in a lifetime opportunit y: an Economy Class return f light to Frankfurt and a visit to the Lufthansa Flight Simulator sta- tion for two persons. The f lights are being offered complimentary by Lufthansa German Airlines and the Flight Simulator visit by Lufthansa Technik Malta. AMaze2 will house a host of dif- ferent scientific themes presented with an artistic f lair. There are several exhibits including one on the particle accelerator at CERN, X-ray Crystallography, which is the way to make 3D models of molecules, and a tech-biogarden installation to name a few. The large labyrinth installation has been designed by Logix Crea- tive and Daaa Haus for Science in the Cit y, Valletta 2018 Founda- tion and Notte Bianca for visitors of all ages. The CERN Large Hadron Col- lider (LHC) is used to study the fundamental constituents of mat- ter. Visitors will get a first-hand account of how a particle accel- erator works. Computer scientist Gianluca Valentino heads the team behind this installation. The project in- volves several interactive exhibits on how the Universe works and matter is kept together. Constructed by scientists to- gether with a number of artists and ICT experts, the art instal- lation produced by the art group IZAXA is in collaboration with Rosalin Bonetta, a biochemistry researcher at the Universit y of Malta. The installation invites partici- pants to explore the inner work- ings of X-Ray Crystallography on the 100th anniversary since its beginning. X-Ray Crystallography is a technique vital to understand how proteins in our body look, viruses work and to make new drugs. Biopilot 1.0 [Sound Modulation upon the Plant Model] by artist Mirjana Batinić is a cross-disci- plinary tech-biogarden installa- tion. Set as a computer controlled sound platform, this work is open for everyone to play with the de- vices and make their own sounds with living systems. The work is a live, pulsing, art-sci organism. The Science in the Cit y festival – European Researchers' Night is supported by the EU's Marie Skłodowska-Curie Action of the Horizon 2020 (H2020) Pro- gramme.
