XV maltatoday, Sunday, 15 February 2015 This Week Conference on education for sustainable development in Malta Superstar DJ and producer Martin Garrix announced for Isle of MTV MTV and the Malta Tourism Authority have revealed superstar DJ Martin Garrix as the first major name to hit the bill for this year's Isle of MTV, taking place at the Granaries in Floriana on July 7. Additional performers will be announced in the coming weeks. As one of the world's youngest DJ's, 18-year- old Garrix stormed the DJ Mag Top 100 in 2014, smashing into #4 position as a result of sensational break-out dance anthem 'Animals' which catapulted him into the spotlight. The song received almost half a billion views on YouTube and topped the charts around the world, earning the platinum status in the US. Having collaborated with some of the world's biggest names includ- ing Ed Sheeran, David Guetta, Tiesto, Hardwell and Afrojack, and dominated the stage at some of the world's biggest music festivals – in- cluding Coachella, EDC Las Vegas, Ultra and Belgium's Tomorrowland – there's no surprise that Martin Garrix is considered "the fastest ris- ing star in Electronic Dance Music". Speaking about the forthcoming appearance, the star commented, "I can't wait to play Isle of MTV, it's such an amazing event with some of the best crowds in the world!" Bruce Gillmer, EVP, Music, Talent Pro- gramming and Events, VIMN, commented: "We are absolutely thrilled that Martin Garrix will join us for IOMTV 2015! Malta will never be the same!" The open-air concert – which attracts a live crowd of more than 50,000 music fans each year - will be filmed and edited into a 60-minute special that will broad- cast across 20 MTV channels throughout Europe. Over the nine years that Isle of MTV has been held in Malta, the number of visitors to the island under the age of 24 has increased by 120.9% and now account for 19.9% of all tourists. At the end of the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Devel- opment (UNDESD), the Centre for Environmental Education and Research (CEER) will be organis- ing a conference with the primary objective of creating a forum in which to share local experi- ences, practice and research on education for sustainable development (ESD). The con- ference will be held at the Aula Magna, Univer- sity of Malta, Valletta campus on February 20 and 21. In addition, the Conference seeks to strength- en the networking between different institutions working in the fields of EE, ESD and related educations, discuss post-UN- DESD strategies to policies on ESD, identify current challenges (in ESD promotion) and seek strategies to address them, cel- ebrate CEER's work and show- case research in ESD carried out through the Centre and provide a position paper about ESD promo- tion for local policy makers. The focus of the 1st National ESD conference will be Maltese Islands within a Euro-Med and global context. The conference is intended for: students, lectur- ers, teachers, senior manage- ment, head teachers, educa- tion depart- ment personnel, policy makers, curriculum de- velopment spe- cialists, CSOs and NGOs, local councils, practitioners in the field of environment and sustainable development and the general public that shares the broad aims of the conference.
