22 maltatoday, WEDNESDAY, 2 MARCH 2016 Sport MOTORSPORTS PHOTOGRAPHY BY MARIO MICALLEF Johnson, Fenech and Muscat dominate ASMK races ON Sunday 28 February 2016 Assocjazzjoni Sport Muturi u Karozzi organized the 7th Au- tocross event and the 4th Mo- tocross event of the ASMK Pasta Poiatti 2015/2016 Champi- onships. This activity was held at the ASMK Sports Complex in Ta' Qali with 39 competitors regis- tered for this event. A Look at the day's event where in Autocross Karl Micallef on a Ford Fiesta was the only driver to win all the heats on the day. To- gether with Karl, Gordon John- son on an Opel Corsa, Josef Grech on a Ford Fiesta, Jurgen Mallia on a Honda Civic, Keith Borg on a Vauxhall Nova and Godfrey Gauci on Ford Fiesta were listed as the Class A competitors. Right from the Start of this fi- nal we saw Micallef and Johnson speed to the first bend but John- son took the helm of the race right to the Finish. Grech and Micallef followed at speed too. The focus has turned on the last three competitors led by Mal- lia and Gauci and Borg chased along. The pressure on Mallia caused him to do a small mistake where Borg took the lead ahead of Mallia and Gauci too. The Race Final ended with Johnson taking his first Finish Flag of the season. Grech and Micallef finished in 2nd and 3rd places respectively. Borg finished in fourth followed by Gauci in fifth place and Mallia in sixth place. The Class B Finalist were An- drew Pisani and Josef Abela on a Vauxhall Nova, Chris Formosa on a Ford Fiesta, the Peugeot 106 of Jean Paul Grech and Joseph Micallef and Malcolm Borg both on Opel Corsa cars. Right from the Start we saw a good lead by Micallef followed by Abela and Borg racing in this position right to the finish. As the race pro- gressed Grech finished in fourth place and Formosa ended in fifth. Pisani finished in sixth place fol- lowing his retirement during the race. In the Standard Class, Johann Vella qualified on his Opel No- va, Traydon Bailey on a Ford Ka, Deane Farrugia and Ian Fenech both on a Citroen AX and Joseph Martin on a Peugeot 206. Right from the Start of this final race Fenech took the lead to win the race. Vella and Bailey followed. The focus turned immediately on to fourth place when Farrugia was making so much pressure on Bailey in fifth place as he man- aged to overtake on Bailey. The final came to an end with Fenech registering his first win followed by Vella and Farrugia. Fourth place was won by Bailey and Mar- tin finished in sixth place. In Motocross we saw a double battle among all competitors as after two small accidents and racing was stopped by the Red Flag. Racing was Re-Start in both Heats. An Overview in Class A where we saw an interesting battle between Clayton Camill- eri and Paul Muscat both riding on KTM motorcycles. During the First Heat Muscat was seen to take the helm of the race and defend his position challenged by Clayton Camilleri. In the 2nd Second Heat Camilleri appeared very strong so much so that he took the lead on Muscat. The pressure of Muscat on Camilleri continued to the last four Laps before the race finish where Mus- cat took the lead again to the Fin- ish Flag ahead of Camilleri. Third place was won by Kyle Camilleri on a KTM. The Motocross Class B Gozo riders dominated this class. Etienne Bigeni riding hos Kawa- saki won both Heats on the day and his 2nd win of the season. Bigeni was followed by Robert Spiteri on a Yamaha and Elvin Debono on a Kawasaki in 2nd and 3rd places respectively. The Open Motocross Class winner was again Paul Muscat on his KTM thus complementing his absolute victories in Class A and in the Open Class too. Mus - cat won the Open Class ahead of Etienne Bigeni on his Kawasaki. Third place was won by Kyle Camilleri on his KTM.
