22 maltatoday, WEDNESDAY, 13 JULY 2016 Sport SAILING FORMULA 1 Fifty Six years and going strong – the RMYC Malta-Syracuse Race DATING back to the sixties, the Malta-Syracuse Race, organised by the Royal Malta Yacht Club in conjunction with the Lega Nav- ale Italiana (Sezione Siracusa), is the oldest race on the Club's calendar. A very popular race, well at- tended by Maltese and Sicilian boats alike, this race has also become a highlight of the Sicil- ian racing calendar. The start of the race alternates each year, one year starting from Malta and the next starting from Syracuse. Now in its 56th edition, the 85 nautical mile race will start in Malta and will take place on Saturday 16th July and boats from Sicily are expected to start arriving for the event a few days before the Skippers' Briefing, which will take place on Friday 15th July on the Club's terrace at 19:00hrs. The Malta-Syracuse Race, typically attracts a f leet of over seventy boats with the highest participation registered in 2010 when the race celebrated its fiftieth year. In 2014 Massimo Savoca's Dreamer Tech estab- lished a course record when he completed the race in 08:37:22. With last year's weather condi- tions making it impossible for crews to beat the time clocked by Savoca in 2014, the gauntlet has been thrown to boats wish- ing to register a new record. The prize-giving ceremony will take place at the Lega Nav- ale in Syracuse on Sunday. Red Bull runs halo at Silverstone test RED Bull ran a version of the 'halo' cockpit protection device on the opening morning of the post-British Grand Prix test, at the FIA's request, to further assess it ahead of its planned introduction in 2017. Red Bull youngster Pierre Gasly com- pleted an installation lap with the system at Silverstone and, according to a team spokesperson, reported that overall vis- ibility was "fine". Red Bull has now carried out on track checks with both the halo, initially pre- sented by Mercedes and tested on mul- tiple occasions by Ferrari, and its 'aero- screen' concept. Red Bull trialled its own halo, rather than the one tested by Ferrari. Formula 1 is poised to introduce the halo over the aeroscreen for the 2017 sea- son, as it bids to improve cockpit safety, but the FIA is yet to formally add it to the regulations. Red Bull is unsure if it will run the halo again today.
