Famalco Group celebrates summer in style FA M ALCO Group prioritises the wellbeing of its employees and values the importance of productively co-existing with the people you spend the major- ity of your day within inside an office. Understanding that build- ing strong relationships during working hours is not entirely possible due to the work that needs to be done, Famalco pro- vides its team with monthly team-building events as a way for the group to get to know each other outside of a working environment. This win-win situation both enables them to get to know each other better, while at the same time providing the group with a team that works well to- gether and is therefore more ef- ficient. For the peak of the summer season, Famalco could think of no better way of building the team's relationships than to meet up for the annual summer BBQ that they host. On 29 July, employees of the Famalco Group met at the Olive Gardens in Imdina, where they spent hours enjoying the good food and even better company of their co-workers. Photobooths were available and the open bar just served to create a more relaxing atmos- phere. It was also an opportunity for the Group to celebrate the birthday of one of the Com- pany's three directors; gifts on behalf of the whole group were presented after the cake was cut. Online gallery invites artist submissions THE Maltese Gallery, an initiative inspired by Maltese, for Maltese, just launched its website, www.the- maltesegallery.com, during the last weekend of July. This launch will see the first of a series of Maltese artists' profiles, coming together to display local ar- tistic talent in a bid to push its rich value to a worldwide audience. While the local artistic scene has seen slow movement in recent years, The Maltese Gallery aims to go beyond that, outlining the indi- vidual artists and their strengths to ensure that local craftsmanship and skills are made accessible for all. "We have art and culture at heart," director of The Maltese Gallery Kurt Vella said about the aim behind this idea. "I don't be- lieve we'd be doing it if we didn't." Vella defined the scope of The Gallery as a revival of the Maltese artisan. "We believe there is a lot of inter- est in the local artisanal product – but not much is being done to pro- mote the skills of the artisan. In our modern climate, it has become easy to simply disregard these things. We want to put a stop to that." The Maltese Gallery started in fact as an initiative to increase awareness about Maltese art and has slowly evolved into a fully- fledged platform, where artists who sign up are given a professional portfolio and their own virtual space to present their works of art. These works will also be available for sale, worldwide. "We wish to start a new move- ment, to help Maltese artists make a name for themselves and for their country and, why not, help artistic organizations exhibit their own tal- ents." A number of interesting projects led by this initiative are already lined up for the coming months. As such, the team members at The Maltese Gallery wish to extend an invitation for all interested art- ists, individuals and organisations alike, to approach them with port- folios, ideas and projects. Unfortunately, spaces are limited. Artists who sign up first and who meet the required criteria have a better chance to be chosen to be displayed therein. Exhibitors who wish further promotion are also invited to get in touch. Further news and updates will be delivered on The Maltese Gal- lery's website as well as their Face- book page facebook.com/TheMal- teseGallery. Climate-KIC is supported by the European Institute of Innova- tion and Technology (EIT), a body of the European Union whose mission is to create sustainable growth. Climate-KIC is Europe's leading open innovation network driv- ing climate action by bringing to- gether, inspiring and empowering a dynamic community to build a zero carbon economy and climate resilient society. Its community includes over 200 partners from business, higher ed- ucation and research, public enti- ties, as well as regional policy-mak- ers, to spur innovation in Europe. The Regional Innovation Scheme is the Climate-KIC's outreach programme which operates with the objectives to increase climate- change focussed innovation capac- ity across Europe; foster pan-Euro- pean relationships that integrate knowledge triangle actors to pro- mote open innovation; and devel- op relationships with regions that don't yet benefit directly from the EIT and its Knowledge and Inno- vation Communities (KICs). Paragon Europe has guided a local consortium based on the knowledge triangle of business, research and higher education, involving Malta College of Arts, Science and Technology and the Malta Life Sciences Park for Malta to participate in the Climate-KIC. The core of the activities involved will be conducted in 2017, in close collaboration with Malta's Presi- dency of the EU and linked to the implementation goals of Malta's Smart Specialisation Strategy. Paragon Europe CEO, Dr Anton Theuma explains that "as a transi- tion region, Malta can fast-track its commitment to the low-carbon agenda thanks to EIT RIS and now has the opportunity to strengthen collaboration with leading inno- vative regions. Malta will also be looking to become one of the host destinations for Climate-KIC ac- tivities." The EIT RIS 2016 provides a chance for Malta to link the Climate-KIC with PRIMA Initia- tives under the Presidency where Research & Innovation collabora- tions within the Mediterranean will be developed. A big push is possible for Malta because of po- litical support to low carbon since a whole chapter of Malta's Op- erational Programme 2014-2020 is dedicated to the low-carbon economy transition and resource efficient buildings is also one of Malta's smart specialisation strat- egy areas. The RIS kick-off meeting was held in Brussels, at Climate-KIC EU Office, on 26 and 27 July where all regions were provided with fur- ther information with regards to the programme and started plan- ning the delivery of activities. During this meeting, Paragon Europe presented Malta as a new region participating in the RIS.
