45 Events maltatoday, SUNDAY, 28 AUGUST 2016 Starlings take flight to Lucerne STARLING, a Junior Achieve- ment Young Enterprise Malta Foundation (JAYE Malta) company represented Malta at the 27th Junior Achievement Europe Company of The Year Competition in Lucerne, Swit- zerland between the 25th and 27th of July. As winners of the national JAYE Malta Com- pany Programme – offered to all students undertaking Post- Secondary education – Star- ling, a JAYE company, were one of 40 teams from 36 countries that meet annually to showcase their products / services and highlight their entrepreneurial journey to various panels of ex- perienced business jurists. Over 400 students, JAYE staff, teachers, and advisors from 36 countries were involved in this 3-day competition, which was presided over by his Excellency the President of Swiss Confed- eration, Johann Schneider-Am- mann. JAYE Malta is a non-govern- ment, non-profit organisation promoting entrepreneurship education, employability skills, and financial literacy. Starling won the coveted JAYE Malta's HSBC Company of the Year award, as well as the Best Im- plementation of Marketing & Sales Strategies Award pre- sented by CIM Malta. Over a period of one whole scholas- tic year, Starling created their mini-company and launched The Innovase Collection by us- ing rejected or discarded wine bottles. This collection is com- prised of unique upcycled wine bottles that are turned into contemporary decoration piec- es through handmade designs. The Maltese delegation con- sisted of the seven student- entrepreneurs aged between 16 and 17 years old: Samuel Sciberras (Managing Director), Kay Lee Micallef (Company Secretary), Samuel Bonello (Finance Director), Nicola Mi- callef (Human Resource Direc- tor), Jake Bartolo (Operations Director), Sophie Gatt (Market- ing Director), and Miguel Pel- legrini Petit (Sales Director), as well at the St. Aloysius College Link Teacher, Mr Keith Sam- mut, and two JAYE Malta staff. "The opportunity to start up and run our own company is something many wish for and we can call ourselves lucky to achieve it. Junior Achievement Young Enterprise has given us the proper platform on which we can successfully operate our business with a step by step approach in which we gain the necessary skills and experience so that we can be confident en- trepreneurs in the real world of business." enthused Miguel on behalf of Starling, a JAYE com- pany. SubReader, a student mini company from Denmark won the JA Europe Company of the Year Competition after im- pressing the judges with their strong business concept. Sub- Reader create an app which works independently of any set- up to help dyslexic people read subtitles on international TV and movies through synchro- nised interpretation. JAYE Malta CEO, Julian Azz- opardi stressed the importance of giving increased access to such events to Maltese youth as "it brings them face-to-face with the reality of the market's competitiveness. They under- stand that their business is not solely local but also global and the success they achieve is dependent on how well they can adapt, seek, reinvent them- selves according to the new market opportunities available and, more importantly, those they create themselves. Second call for ITS full-time courses THE Institute of Tourism Stud- ies will be issuing a second call for applications for entry into its full-time programmes of studies. Applications will be received on the 5th, 6th and 7th September 2016 at the Institute's main cam- pus, situated at St George's Bay, St Julians. Full-time courses at the Insti- tute of Tourism Studies begin in October and prospective stu- dents who meet the necessary course requirements can apply to start their studies from the various entry points within the Institute's academic progression programme, as follows: Foundation in Hospitality and Tourism; Certificate in Travel & Tourism; Certificate in Rooms Division; Certificate in Events & Leisure; Certificate in Food Preparation & Production; High- er National Diploma in Hospital- ity Management; and Higher Na- tional Diploma in Tour Guiding. Consolidating work from last year, the Institute's various programmes of study are built around a streamlined progres- sive system whereby prospective students can enrol at the various entry points offer by the Insti- tute's progression system and ad- vance year after year until they attain the highest qualifications available. New excavator joins Faceworks family FACEWORKS Ltd. has always in- vested in equipment that priori- tises productivity, safety and ease of service, and the Case excavator 1121F is no exception. Over all, this piece of equipment is a valuable addition to an already existing large f leet of equipment that keep Faceworks at the top of the excavation and demoli- tion business. The Lido also recently hosted its first pool party complete with a live DJ lounge session where punters danced, drank and dined while enjoying the ambience against the backdrop of beautiful sea views and a gor- geous Maltese sunset.
