Thousands have visited the Farsons Beer Festival so far Drinking abuse breaks other lives too THE theme of the 2017 sum- mer campaign launched by The Sense Group (TSG) is "Drinking abuse breaks other lives too…Be drink aware". Featuring stark black and white imagery that aims to give maximum impact for the mes- sage, the campaign is designed to extend the consciousness of the negative results of exces- sive alcohol consumption be- yond oneself, and make abusers think about the people around them, including friends and relatives. "The Sense Group is acutely aware of the impact that un- controlled drinking habits have on society in general, commu- nities, families and friends. One tends to talk mostly on the harm to the person who abuses of alcohol to oneself in terms of health, livelihood, and one's own quality of life. But the ripple effect on those around the abuser can have devastating consequences that most times go beyond repair and lead to a life of regret," said Ray Grech, Director General of The Sense Group. The public is invited to share this message as much as pos- sible in order to create more awareness of this issue, and to visit the drinkawaremalta.com website to learn more about the facts that can lead to a way of living with alcohol in a moder- ate manner. Screen grab of The Sense Group 2017 summer campaign Delicata Wine Festival returns to the Upper Barrakka Gardens Wine coins will be the common currency at this sum- mer's Delicata Classic Wine Festival, exchangeable for glasses of Maltese wines. Organised by Emmanuel Delicata Winemaker, Malta's greatest wine experience of the year will be held at the Upper Barrakka Gardens in Valletta, from 19:00 till midnight. There will be over 20 different wines to be sampled. Vintages of nine Delicata award-winning brands will be served from as many stalls spread along the garden's periphery. To try the Delicata wines, all one has to do is to pur- chase a little wine purse for €15 at the entrance gate of the Upper Barrakka Gardens. The wine purse comes filled with 24 wine coins and complete with a souvenir glass which is for the wine lover to keep. Otherwise en- trance is free of charge. Handing over the correct change of wine coins at the stalls inside will prompt dedicated wine stewards to pour a standard 150 ml glass of the wine on show in the festival glass. Every evening there will be a double-bill starting with an opening-night concert on Thursday by WaterWings and Red Electrick. The Busker and the Spiteri Lucas Band will perform on Friday, Planet Seed and The Crowns will play on Saturday, and Cash & Band and The Travellers will bring the wine event of the year to a close on Sunday. Delicata Privilege Card holders can use the fast track facility provided they pre-book and pay online through Delicata's website. Strictly no wine will be served to anyone under 17 and patrons are reminded to enjoy re- sponsibly. Wine purses and glasses are sold until 23:00, wine is poured up to 23:30 and the festival closes every night at midnight. The glass bottle collection runs early morning at 1.00am from bars and restaurants along the promenade of Gzira, Sliema, and St. Julians, and now in Paceville. The collection truck starts from Manoel Island, through The Strand, Qui-si-Sana, Tower Road, Balluta Bay, Spinola Hill and continues its route around Paceville's busy com- mercial areas. The Paceville route includes Dobbie Street, Gort Street, Dragonara Road, Church Street, Paceville Avenue, Ross Street, Salvu Privitera Street, Schrieiber Street, St Andrew's Road, St Augustine Street, Wilġa Street, and St. George's Bay. "GreenPak's early morning glass collec- tion service has been running uninter- ruptedly and free of charge since August 2016, ensuring a more environmentally friendly waste disposal strategy for these bars and catering establishments. The service collected 35,200 kgs of glass bot- tles to-date," said Daniel Tabone, Opera- tions Manager at GreenPak Coop Society. "During the busier summer months, catering outlets produce a larger volume of empty glass bottles, from these locali- ties. Apart from diverting such amounts from landfills, we ensure the least possi- ble noise pollution and traffic conjestion, the least business interruption, and tidier environments in and around workplaces," added Mr Tabone. Held in collaboration with the Local Councils of Sliema, Gzira and St Julians and the Cleaning Services Department, the free service collects empty glass bot- tles and glass jars. This dedicated service runs daily at 1.00am, including Sundays, until 1 October 2017. From 6 October 2017, the service will continue on week- ends (Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays) at the same time. In addition, GreenPak Cooperative So- ciety also runs the monthly service of its door-to-door glass collection from house- holds and commercial outlets on the first Friday of the month. In Gozo, the same glass collection service is operated every first Thursday of the month.
