maltatoday SUNDAY, 1 OCTOBER 2017 Sport 54 FOOTBALL Last gasp goal give Tarxien their first win PHOTOGRAPHY BY DOMINIC BORG Tarxien Rainbows .........2 Sliema Wanderers .........1 WARREN ZAMMIT TARXIEN created the first chance of the match after 16 min- utes, when Ryan Darmanin sent a shot from the edge of the penalty area that went over. Sliema replied on the 20th min- ute. From a free-kick, Ricardo Correa hit a shot that ended up off target. Three minutes later, Jefferson De Assis of Sliema fired a low shot from inside the penalty area that was neutralised by Christian Cas- sar. The Rainbows broke the dead- lock on the 27th minute. Ayrton Azzopardi sent a perfect pass towards Darmanin who went through on goal and sent the ball past Glenn Zammit. Sliema almost equalised a min- ute later. Nikola Gavric hit a shot from inside the penalty area that took a deflection off Godwin Mc- Kay and ended up slightly over. And it was not long before the Wanderers' equalizer came, on the 35th minute. Tarxien defend- ers failed to clear the ball and possession fell for De Assis who finished past Cassar. Sliema threatened again on the 42nd minute. Matias Muchardi hit a powerful drive that sailed wide. Tarxien started the second half looking to regain the lead and had a good opportunity on the 49th minute when Darmanin sent a low shot that ended centimetres off target. On the 68th minute, Muchardi of Sliema fired a shot from outside the penalty area that also went only slightly off target. Sliema kept insisting and had another great chance on the 73rd minute. But Frenci Qeros saw his close range shot being blocked by Cassar. Cassar was on the alert once more to deny Sliema on the 84th minute. Qeros served Temille and the latter hit a powerful drive that was saved by the Tarxien shot stopper. Sliema paid harshly for losing these opportunities as the Rain- bows notched the winner in the additional time. Following a free- kick, James Brincat delivered the ball towards Scicluna whose ef- fort went behind Zammit.
