maltatoday WEDNESDAY 22 NOVEMBER 2017 News 3 • A man currently in police custody is believed to have been commissioned to carry out the crime • Angelo Mangion was probably killed by accident UPHOLSTERER Raymond Grima was the intended target of Friday's shooting inci- dent in which another man was killed, the police said in a statement yesterday. Grima, 61, from Iklin was working in his workshop in Attard when he was seri- ously injured after being shot at by a man wearing a motorcycle helmet. He is cur- rently recovering in hospital under po- lice surveillance. A second man, Angelo Mangion, known as Lino, was killed on the spot. After conflicting media reports emerged over the weekend about who the intended target was, investigators said they now believe Mangion - a fireworks and festa enthusiast from Qormi - to have only been an unintended victim in the crime. The police added that they were continuing to analyse information sent by members of the public. Sources close to the investigation have said that a man currently under police custody, and who was hospitalised dur- ing interrogation, is believed to have been commissioned to carry out the crime. They added that the police were work- ing on the theory that somebody may have wanted to settle his dues with Gri- ma and contracted the killer. The police were initially confounded by the crime since the victims did not have any previous brushes with the law. Following the last electoral defeat, outgoing PN leader Simon Busuttil had claimed that his administration was leaving the party a good sol- id financial base, that could see it through for the follow- ing 18 months. But informed sources have confirmed that the party's finances will not last beyond the third week of January, and that was before taking into consideration the new directorships that Adrian Delia's team intends to in- troduce. The appointment last week of Pierre Portelli as execu- tive chairman of Media.link, the party's media subsidiary, was one such position – and salary – that had not figured in the dire estimates. The same sources con- firmed that the PN will be proceeding with the sale of its clubs in Hal Ghaxaq and Fleur-de-Lys, as revealed by KullHadd on Sunday. But MaltaToday has now learned that more property is to be sold off, with the next clubs to come up for sale being those in Zejtun and Naxxar. With regards to the Fleur- de-Lys club, the party will, in fact, be selling it imminently but will be setting up a new club in another property it owns in High Road, Santa Venera. Most of the sale contracts were finalised by outgoing president of the party's exec- utive committee, Ann Fene- ch, who signed agreements for the sale of a number of party clubs before the last election, leav- ing the current ad- ministration no option but to sell the property. When contacted, a spokes- man for Delia said that the party would not discuss in- ternal commercial decisions in public. "PN Leader Adrian Delia has never made such prom- ise and has publicly stated that the party will honor commercial decisions taken by the previous administra- tion of the party," he said. But MaltaToday is now in- formed that Delia and his team are strongly consider- ing selling more clubs in a bid to establish a stronger financial footing. The new team is currently also working hard to prepare for the party's end-of-year fund-raising marathon, with the administration insisting they be the first to hold such a marathon this festive sea- son, so as to persuade people to donate more. The PN's marathon is planned for 10 December. The party is also pushing its sectional committees and local branches to organise more fund-raising activities and to be more involved in the collection of member- ship renewal fees and other payments. The Nationalist Party is selling more of its clubs – including the Zejtun and Naxxar clubs – in a bid to boost finances, which will otherwise not last beyond the end of January PN to sell Zejtun, Naxxar clubs in bid to raise funds The PN club in Fleur-de-Lys (left) is being sold as the party sets up a club in Santa Venera • The club in Naxxar (above) is earmarked for imminent sale
