Bitcoin exchange collapses after second cyber attack in a year A South Korean digital cur- rency exchange said it is fi l- ing for bankruptcy after it was hacked for the second time in a year. North Korean hackers are believed to be behind a heist that lost an exchange called YouBit nearly 4,000 Bitcoins in April, according to South Korean reports. YouBit - a small player in South Korea's cryptocurrency market - said this morning that hackers had stolen 17 per cent of its crypto assets at 04:35am local time on Tuesday. The price of Bitcoin fell from just under €18,000 to just over €17,000. Customers cryptocurrency assets will be marked down to 75pc, YouBit wrote in an apology note posted on its website. The statement, signed from "all employees" at YouBit, said that it is calling in administrators and working on minimising customer losses. Details of the refund process will be confi rmed in an "additional notice", it added. YouBit said it had made "ever effort" to improve its security and hire more security staff following the hack in April, and despite a smaller loss, this attack was the fi nal nail in the coffi n. South Korea's intelligence service, Korea Internet and Security Agency (KISA) is investigating. Recent cyber attacks have been linked to North Korea, which is believed to have netted millions in the virtual currency. More is expected as international sanctions limit Pyongyang's supply of cash. KISA reported that 7.6 billion won (£5.2 million) worth of cryptocurrencies were stolen in those previous attacks on multiple exchanges, according to South Korea's Chosun Ilbo newspaper. A malicious code used in attacks over the summer was "virtually identical" to previous attacks connected to North Korea, researchers found. The US early yesterday blamed Kim Jong-un's regime for the WannaCry ransomware that spread across 150 different countries in May this year, crippling several NHS clinics and hospitals. The largest digital exchange in South Korea is Bithumb which accounts for 70pc of the country's cryptocurrency. Bitcoin exchanges and wallets are hot targets for hackers and it is feared they will become more vulnerable as valuations rise.
